Did Peter Reid get it wrong after 1999 promotion..

Reid never got anything wrong he did what he wanted to and sometimes just to make the point with the fans taht he was in charge ( Kilbane, Dichio / Bridges)
The 2 7th places were the opposite of our Premiership survival years great fron halves very poor back ends. Indeed if we had any sort of form Chelsea would of went bust because they wouldn't of qualified for Europe.
I think it speaks volumes that the 2 7th places are thought so highly given how shit we have been for a depressingly long time.
People forget his relegation and stubborness that put us there.
He got lucky with Phillips after Reading.
We only survived the previous season before relegation because of Norwich europe run and games caught up with them.
He must of bought more CH's than any other manager, limited pool of players given he tended to buy them same place.
The summer before relegation he just moved the deck chairs around and went for a piss up on telly in Japan for the World Cup. It was embarassing and he should of been sacked then but really showed his arrogance.
That relegation was down to him and him alone no matter who took over the die was cast.
He left the club near enough bankrupt spending silly money on palyers without any thought.
He never got any hassle from the media with all his mates Sky / BBC and they just laughed it off.
The stark reality is he left us the same place he found us, a lot poorer and pitied

To be fair regarding Thomas Helmer, I think he only played half a dozen games before Hertha Berlin binned him too. Reid was probably right in saying his legs had gone.

I remember being really frustrated by the whole Hutchison signing.

The first season we came up, we were flying, we were trying to sign him before the transfer deadline. Don't remember the figures exactly but Everton wanted something like £2.75m and we were bidding something like £1.5m. So we didn't sign him until the following season and paid about £2.5m. Although 7th sounds like a good finish, we actually fell away at the end up the season and I've we'd paid just that little but more the bring in Hutchison half a season earlier it might have helped us kick on, he really made a big impact when he did come in.

Was also really frustrating to have frozen out Alan Johnston because he wouldn't renew his contract, and seem to remember a reluctance to play Summerbee even though he'd done so well to get us up.

Then it didn't help when we started signing players like Helmer and Medina but not playing them.

You mean when he froze him out then at the 11th said "you're playing son" even though the lad wasn't fit? Canny of him that.
Yes smart arse, but what I'm saying is we didn't know the circumstances as described in the post I was replying to at the time. Or at least I didn't. There was obviously talk of a falling out but nobody really knew what was going on.

Crouch was being talked up at work down here by a few QPR fans, his one season at qpr was our second 7th season and we were shite in its second half. He was young and they needed the money, that summer he was off to Pompey.

He was a Rangers enthusiast when at safc. Mag as owt.

Would YOU have given it to Reid to spend? Looking at the shit he was buying at the time I think Murray gets a hard time in opting for the extension.
Aye I was watching something on BT at the weekend and he said ‘Newcastle the team I support’ was sick in my mouth

Even if Reid/Murray had signed the 2 or 3 quality players that would have pushed us on, I think it would only ever have been short term - Wenger and Ferguson we're changing the football world and I think Reidy would have reached dinosaur status quicker than he did ie at the top end of the division his style would have been exposed

Correct. You just have to look at Reidys "career" after leaving us.

The quality of players the Saudis and dafter elements of their support expect to come to Syd James’s don’t even come to the PL. No best in the world type player has ever transferred into the PL in their prime.

Mind his tv careers taken a dive. Leave yer wife n kids and that’s a chance you take.
True enough, but I think he’s enjoying himself to be fair 😂

Johnston had his head turned by Rangers. He was own worst enemy there. We didn't exactly miss him.

Summerbee played the full first season we finished 7th. I'm a tad surprised looking back to see he didn't really feature in the second 7th place season, so you could argue he wasn't really missed.

That relegation was horrible like.

We were linked with Robbie Keane and Trevor Sinclair loads. Not sure if either were ever close to signing for us

He was great for us but I agree he seemed patchy elsewhere. Didn’t seem to do much for West Ham.

Quinn actually wrote about this in the Guardian newspaper, he said that "the slide happened because of 2 transfers that didn't happen, and one that did".

He said both Makele (!) and Sinclair had agreed to come, fees agreed with their clubs, and they were in wearside negotiating terms.
Whilst Hutchison had had a stellar season, and had come home to the NE even though SAFC offered him the lowest wages of the 3 deals he was offered - with the club saying they would renegotiate if things went well.

Murray wouldn't sanction the wages for Sinclair or Makele, and wouldn't renegotiate with Hutchy, so all 3 left, while basically sent out a signal that we wouldn't pay the going rate.

Makele signed for Chelsea the next season, Sinclair moved on, and Hutchinson doubled his wages at WH but absolutely trashed his knee with a serious injury.

It's easy in retrospect but we should have sacked him after the 2nd 7th place. It's hard to imagine a manager surviving that kind of run these days. The writing was on the wall.

'Reidy' became a caricature of himself. By then Big Sam had copied his act and was doing it better.

Imagine a midfield of Makelele and Hutchison for us. 🥲

I always used to rate Trevor Sinclair when I was a kid, he was one of my favourite non-SAFC players for some bizarre reason. I would have absolutely loved it if we’d signed him.
