He came in towards the end of the 96-97 Premier League season, I'm sure if him and Chris Waddle had been signed earlier we wouldn't have gone down. Johnston scored the last (competitive) goal at Poker Park, what a game that was.
I've got no doubt at all he'd have been great in the top flight. That Clark/Johnston thing was a disaster. Bridges wanted away anyway for some reason, but how good would it have been to have kept that promotion team together for at least one season after promotion.
I wadve wanted away mesel if Dichio was getting a game ahead of me.

You could see it during the second 7th place that it wasn’t going to last. Flo summed up our poor recruitment. Was never a target man as long as he had a hole in his arse. Playing people out of position constantly and a squad full of honest players.

All went wrong when we tried to sign to sign Jan Koller and signed his identical twin Milton Núñez instead.

Agreed. Completely different level though.
That's what Rodney Marsh said about Phillips. Sure he said he wouldn't score more than 7 in the prem, and he got 30.
Doesn't mean he would have succeeded but christ he looked totally cut out for that level. Screwed his career up that 12i months not playing
