Did Peter Reid get it wrong after 1999 promotion..

I’d argue he made some very good signings in that first summer (Bould, Schwarz) but there were warning signings the following summer when only Arca would really go on to be a success, although maybe I’m being unfair to Don Hutchison who was really good for us.

2nd in the Premier League at the end of January 2001 man. We looked dead certs for a Champions League place.

If i remember correctly, the beginning of the end was 5-nil drubbing to Everton on boxing day.
not really we went on to finish 7th the following season.
We just didn't replace quality with quality , laslandes , Haas, Bellion, Kilbane, Thirlwell, Babb, and more just were not at the same level

Must have been a great time to be following the club though. Just moved to a state of the art stadium and the team seemed to have a real identity from what I've seen and would give anyone a game. Seemed to be a great atmosphere with a sea of red and white, my first game was in 97/98 at the SOL and that's all i remember. Such a far cry to what it is now sadly

I remember being at school on the day we were due to play Man Utd at the SoL (the game Cole literally punched the ball into the air before scoring the only goal - somehow missed by Graham Poll) and arguing with a plastic United fan about how we were going to beat them.

Literally felt like we could beat anyone. I’ve not had that feeling since and doubt I will again.

The following two years with back to back 7th place top flight finishes says no to a lot of fans. But why did it go wrong after that.
He replaced good players with shit, McAteer, Kilbane, Flo, Haas, all terrible players. He fell out with signings that may have been good and didn’t bring through enough youth. His choice of staff was also terrible.

It was getting weird tbh knowing we had a chance against any team in the country home or away. Mackems, know your place.

Couldn't get the required quality players to sign. Plus the finance wasn't there to over pay and force the deals home. Subsequently we signed players who were not good enough to take us forward and we ended up slipping back over at an alarming rate. Our moments in the sun are always short lived, or always have been in my life time.
And mine. It was reported that Bob Murray said he didn't want the club to grow too fast, that meant, to me, that we had gone far enough for that time. to be fair, Ipswich got into Europe short;y after and it drained their resources, relegated the same year.

Never replaced Makin or Summerbee or Rae or Hutchison or Quinn, for starters

Still haven’t

The thought of watching Kilbane play still makes me shudder

There were no transfer windows then (other than a March deadline day), so we had ample opportunity to strengthen. We failed to do so (ending up with crap like Nunez instead) which cost him and us.
Didn't he say he couldn't buy better than we had on the budget he had .loads of tumours about him taking backhanded ftom agents. Him and allerdyce, Godmersham teammates and similar old school managers. Wouldn't surprise me if true.

He always seemed to play well against us for w.b a. Seemed a good signing at the time. He got played on the wrong wing a canny few times.

No need for backhanders, they were actually part owners of a fairly large agency along with a few other managers at the time. FA banned that sort of thing a couple of seasons after he left here.

Didn't know that, surely that would have limited his choice of transfer targets. Seems very dodgey and the f.a. must have thought so as well. If someone could replicate that team Reidy built they could have as many back handers as they wanted gor me. Allerdice as well. Team he built to beat relegation looked to be well on the up for the following season till Moyes fucked us up.
