Did anyone do the school cross country in freezing conditions?

I can't believe that it was part of the school curriculum so every school must have done it, it was like torture, I think one lad ended up with frost bite in one of his hands, thing is that back then it was probably seen as been good for the body.

I was on the team.

One Saturday I slipped up over on the Arctic tundra next to the nearby school and asked myself "Why are you even doing this?".

I couldn't answer so I walked back and told Stinker Welsh I was done

Running along path on cliff tops past rifle range at Whitburn then up to cleadon hills then back to Whitburn comp , done once in first year then never again for some reason?
Must of being some strange initiation for first years!
I couldn’t run a bath walked most of way and came in with the stragglers.

Loved winter cross country.

The teachers loved it too as they sent us out on our own ( ie no staff). Doubt today's children would be allowed?

Best thing of the week.

Touch rugby in the snar was a favourite of our Fuhrer. He made us strip to shorts only (black shorts, or white shorts for the two teams) nee tops, and we run around in it for half an hour. Then you'd take yerself and your countersunk willie into the hot showers which stung yer blue body even worse.

Yes, in New Kyo near Stanley - shorts and tshirt running along the bypass in arctic conditions. Wasn't just cross country, remember playing football on frozen pitch with a netball one PE lesson (no idea why or where the football's were) and remember jumping to block a clearance and getting the ball smashed right in to my face  my face was so cold I didn't really feel too much. Those were the days, eh?!

Yes, Bede School in the early 70's and cross country in the winter was always a thing.
Usually it was around the perimeter of the sports fields or a couple of laps around Barnes Park.
Character building stuff.
