Then you have not been to that many games
I have watched dismal mundane shite at Roker for many a year & seen us destroy Chelsea at the SOL 4-1 ......
You sir talk absolute rubbish
Opinions, but have been to plenty of games at both places. Haven't counted, but hundreds certainly. Still love watching the lads, but not the same to me.

Really real. Really. The SoL is one of the best modern stadia, but it's still a monstrosity. I understand that this may be an extreme opinion, but its genuine.

(P.S. For what it's worth, I also have a brick, as do my dad and grandpa.)

Means absolutely fck all - My Grandad , Father, or me don't have a fkin brick , but have supported SAFC from the 40s / 50s till now
Really you are not what makes our club special[DOUBLEPOST=1392424998][/DOUBLEPOST]

For christsakes, can't we just disagree? I'm not pretending to be to be the soul of SAFC, just a lifetime supporter with an opinion. I saw most home games in the 70s & 80s, have lived away for the past 25 years but still get to several games a seasons., whenever I get home to see my folks. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that that's not now I feel.

Ok = im being hard , apologise
Keep the faith

I first started going to Roker with my Dad in n around 86 (all for the glory) with my first full season being 87/88. Absolutely loved the place and spent the majority of the late 80's stood on a wooden 'step' with blue rope tied to it, hung on the railings of the main stand paddock, next to the Roker end. I was directly behind Gary Bennett when he hit the winner against Man Utd. Prior to kick off I'd be climbing up n down the concrete banks under the main stand seats. Eventually moved to the family enclosure seats in the main stand once my younger brother started going, and remained there until the end. Happy Days!

You never seen it when it was proper Roker

No mate, I'm envious from looking at pictures and tapes I've seen of the old roker end. I just can't imagine it being as big as it was, especially from the half size stand I remember.
It was massive - not sure what the Roker End held but it couldn't be far off 20 k ?

I don't remember anybody calling it "Roker" until I read it on here a few years ago.

Now everybody seems to call it that, what's that all about?

I live on 1 of the streets that used to back on to the Roker end & sometimes when it's quiet during the night you can here noises, most people say its the sea down Roker, personally I think its the old ghosts of Roker Park .
The people in white coats resemble ghosts, theyre coming[DOUBLEPOST=1392427369][/DOUBLEPOST]
I'm sure it's largely a generational thing, but to me the SoL has always been soulless in comparison. I appreciate that Roker Park was falling apart, but I can honestly say that my worst day at Roker was better than my best day at SoL. Best day at Roker was my first, a 3-1 against Forest in 1968 with Hurley & Todd, Cecil Irwin scoring his one and only league goal. Second best, the Man City 5th round replay in 1973.

I love that they built the SoL on the site of the old colliery - by grandpa spent most of his life down there and my dad grew up, and met my mum next door - but modern stadia are crap. Safety aside, give me decaying grandeur any day. Times move on, but from a personal point of view a good part of the soul's gone.
:lol::lol::lol: Theres always one that goes too far

At the sol you have one Hank Williams at Roker everyone was. To me thats the difference. At Roker I was never looked upon like a two headed alien for cheering the lads on.Sol different.

It looked about as welcoming as a kneecap to the bollocks, and with North Sea winds whipping through it, and no roof on the away end, it probably wasn’t on the ‘best away days’ list for many fans. A shit hole, basically, but a tremendous shit hole made all the more glorious by the ‘Welcome To Sunderland’ sign at the back of the home fans’ Fulwell End.[DOUBLEPOST=1392386219][/DOUBLEPOST]
how the fck did i do that? didnt even want to create a thread. sorry.

i'll carry on now i've started
Yes but it was so much more fun standing in the 'shithole'. Standing made the weather etc so much more bearable

Missed a handful of games at Roker from 1983 until it closed and only can remember the Chelsea cup game being a great atmosphere.

The 2-2 draw against Newcastle surpassed that ..

This clearly sisnt true though. Not one atmosphere at the SOL would make it into the top 300 at roker park, you must be wrong

Roker Park, Roker is an area.
Roker (/ˈroʊkər/, local /ˈrɔːkər/) is a tourist resort and affluent area of Sunderland
wikipedia makes it sound amazing[DOUBLEPOST=1392443149][/DOUBLEPOST]
