I took my son to reserve games during the last season there, He was only 3 or 4, tried to break him in to the noise of the crowds, even the reserves got a bit rowdy back then. Lifted him over the turnstiles so I didn't have to pay him in - I was free with my season ticket. Sad thing his he doesn't remember any of it.

I live on 1 of the streets that used to back on to the Roker end & sometimes when it's quiet during the night you can here noises, most people say its the sea down Roker, personally I think its the old ghosts of Roker Park .

Plenty of them
Rod bellfitt Brett angel all walking around like chained headless corpses
Scoooooobbbbyyyy scoooooobbby dooooooooo
Lawrie mcnemeny as the old proprieter

It was before my time, long gone by the time we made it over in 2007. But the sense you get of how people felt about the place, warts and all, is incredible. And when I see that photo and can pick out the B&B on St. George's Terrace, see the pier, and know we walked through the area where Roker Park stood, it gives me chills.

I used to love the place because you were that close to the players you could actually smell the linament or wintergreen or whatever it was called, that the players used to rub in to the legs to keep them warm.
Also I was only a kid during the 80s but even when the crowds weren't that big something was just special, so special, when you used to walk up to the ground & the floodlights were on , the big 4 pylons in each corner shining down, EPIC, I can remember it as if it were yesterday, memories, great memories !!!

The old Roker end was far more impressive than the Fulwell
IMHO
As a huge escarpment of a terrace, yes - as a potboiling creator of atmosphere, no. The Fulwell End roof (circa 1965) made it a singers paradise...the noise bounced off the roof and sides. Magnificent.
Mind you, the towering, original Roker End was a great sight when fully loaded.

A proper Football ground with a magnificent pitch proper floodlights and a special smell on approach of chicken and mushroom pies fron the Roker Pie Shop, mind you once in dindnt gan to the bog when its a big crowd without wellies and a face mask!. Imagine a ground with more than one singing section egging each other on and the surges when we scored(if we scored) well unless you where then i can not describe it. A proper football ground but times move on!

People get misty eyed over the atmosphere at Roker, it was woeful at times.
Yes it was but preparation mega match always just round corner[DOUBLEPOST=1392421490][/DOUBLEPOST]First visit 1974 vs Southampton (omen surely). Preparation 3-0 then and take same result tomorrow/today. In Germany so time zone confusion activeactive[DOUBLEPOST=1392421563][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'm sure it's largely a generational thing, but to me the SoL has always been soulless in comparison. I appreciate that Roker Park was falling apart, but I can honestly say that my worst day at Roker was better than my best day at SoL. Best day at Roker was my first, a 3-1 against Forest in 1968 with Hurley & Todd, Cecil Irwin scoring his one and only league goal. Second best, the Man City 5th round replay in 1973.

I love that they built the SoL on the site of the old colliery - by grandpa spent most of his life down there and my dad grew up, and met my mum next door - but modern stadia are crap. Safety aside, give me decaying grandeur any day. Times move on, but from a personal point of view a good part of the soul's gone.

Anyone who went to Roker Park on a regular basis would say - a lot of the time it was nowt flash - especially the 70s , 80s , 90s - we were canny in spells but nowt to write home about , we went when were really shite on a dismal Tues or Wed night in mid winter when the crowd maybe 13- 15 k
When Roker was full before the Roker End was reduced - now your talking , unbelievable memories[DOUBLEPOST=1392423536][/DOUBLEPOST]

Really real. Really. The SoL is one of the best modern stadia, but it's still a monstrosity. I understand that this may be an extreme opinion, but its genuine.

(P.S. For what it's worth, I also have a brick, as do my dad and grandpa.)

I only went once, to the final game vs Liverpool, but my main memory was the sea of piss in the bogs with people just pissing on the walls and everything  I wish i'd been a couple of years older to experience the place properly.
