Even when the game and atmosphere was shite it was still a great place to watch a game of football. I loved the place.[DOUBLEPOST=1392393731][/DOUBLEPOST]
It looked about as welcoming as a kneecap to the bollocks, and with North Sea winds whipping through it, and no roof on the away end, it probably wasn’t on the ‘best away days’ list for many fans. A shit hole, basically, but a tremendous shit hole made all the more glorious by the ‘Welcome To Sunderland’ sign at the back of the home fans’ Fulwell End.[DOUBLEPOST=1392386219][/DOUBLEPOST]
how the fck did i do that? didnt even want to create a thread. sorry.

A magical place. I still get a lump in my throat when I drive down Roker Baths Road and look along to my left and still expect it to be there, but it aint!
In it's heyday I honestly don't think another English stadium will have generated the noise that it did,the Roker Roar didn't get it's reputation for nothing.
Danny Blanchflower certainly thought so!

It was excellent at times and shite at others, like most grounds.

Most grounds aren't excellent at times. Excellent once in a blue moon is the best most grounds achieve.

Roker was genuinely special. That's not to say it was special all the time - of course not - but to imply that it was 'like most grounds' suggests you have a poor memory or haven't been to many other grounds.

These people who say the ground was rubbish have no idea. Yes I am biased but imagine over 12000 people for the FA Youth Cup final and winning it by the way. A copper on the ashtrack every now and again. The match against Luton in the 73 Cup run had a camera at the back of the Roker End (my suggestion to the producer at the ground visit 2 weeks before) and we saw the goals perfectly on MOTD! The whole ground before you and a packed Roker End as well.

And as for unwelcoming - I don't think so. Apparently Bobby Robson said to Denis Smith when they were talking about Denis taking the job something like -
Just imagine a full Roker Park!

One of the better grounds in the country. Was used in the World Cup. Might appear a "shit hole" to the Sky generation, when compared to brand new stadiums or redeveloped ones.

I've been to a lot of grounds. Roker was excellent at times. A lot of other clubs also create very good atmospheres. Of course you're biased, as am I.

The Dell had a canny atmosphere

Blackburn Rovers was a dump in the 70s, Ayresome Park was past its best, Maine Road was awful, Bolton Wanderers - good grief, Southampton, Charlton, Selhurst Park, Stamford Bridge - the list is endless...

The thing is they were good at the time. It is only because we can look back that we can see a lot of stadiums needed either updating or knocking down.

I really wish the club had found somewhere in the sol to put rokers leitch latticework that's been shoved in the carpark mind..

Think there's plenty that could've been done to retain some of the character

Same with all the new grounds really. No continuity.

A "cowboy special" at the Roker Chippy, using my Gold Card/season book to get into the Fulwell End and then spending 90 minutes screaming my head off in the cage at the top of the Fullwell, and my mate always had an air horn.

Those were the days. Proper cracking atmosphere.

The one sticking memory which even came up in a wedding speech recently was my best mate who was a Man Utd fan came along in the final season and he had never been to Roker before, and all i remember was seeing his face disappearing into a mass of bodies going down the Fulwell End backwards as Bally scored that diving header against Chelsea. He had half a pie in his hand and half in his mouth and a cup of bovril flying away in the distance.

Just dont get those kind of experiences at the SOL / any football stadia nowadays.

Wonderful place. Linked forever with my childhood, and growing up.

Seems a good thread to share this beauty again

Magnificent pic. How a football ground should be, smack bang in the heart of its community. I dare say a lot of similar views now would show grounds surrounded by retail parks and the like. Gettin' a lump in me throat here, would crawl over broken glass to be back there (probably literally would have to). Will always be No1 for me.

That roker end was a harsh place to be during winter when it felt like -10 and with the driving sleet off the North Sea.

But I loved every minute of it.

Now if I get a spot of rain on me at the sol I feel violated.

I'm on that photo! Oh and if any of the little kids down the front post on here, sorry for nearly squashing you against the barrier whenever we scored.
