Describing 90s LAD culture to todays kids?

Where’s the constant hate towards men?

The right wing media. It's the picture they're attempting to push lately to try and stoke tribal wars.

Anything that supports anything but men is bad and 'woke'. Not my opinion.

what was the craic at leeds last year?

Loads of fires. Seemed like some numpties wanted to try and copy Woodstock '99 which came out round then. Worst it's been for years and they lost control pretty much.

It is strange how many gay pop stars the 80s had ruling the charts compared to the decade after:
Boy George
George Michael
Morrissey
FGTH
Andy Bell
Freddie Mercury
Elton
Rob Halford
Pet Shop Boys

You may have just forgotten about Suede then. Admittedly Brett's comments of the time weren't handled particularly well but the band weren't discarded for any reasons of homophobia.
There are numerous examples of gay musicians prior to Brit Pop and maybe there just weren't many gay people involved in that scene? Isn't the point that it doesn't matter what a persons sexuality was. The fact that the music, style and behaviours might not have appealed to gay people doesn't mean that it was inherently homophobic.
Boy bands played no part in the Brit Pop culture to which I referred. That was all business. You didn't have to be gay to sell to gay people but if you were you might not sell to teenage girls. Only marginally better than not allowing gay people to be in a band but that's business for you.
You have to be careful to not paint the past in a bad light to use as a barometer for the present. I suspect the truth is that it's still difficult to be in a minority group now and kids are still being bullied at school. Just not as bad as it was? That's still not acceptable.
Much of comedy is based on stereotypes and the exaggeration of traits to comedic effect. Not just applied to sexuality but age, gender, nationality, religion and particularly class. Until relatively recently the attitude was everything was fair game and on that basis you weren't discriminating against anyone because everyone was subject to being ridiculed. We now appreciate that isn't acceptable as such jibes were being used to define minorities in a negative or unrepresentative way. I don't believe that the writers of the Office or Friends were homophobic. They just didn't appreciate the negative connotation's of their content.
Is Brett Anderson is your example of a gay Britpop band member who suffered no abuse for it? Because he isn't gay (he's married to a woman, his girlfriend at the time was his female bass player, and he once famously said "I'm a bisexual person that has never had a homosexual experience") and he got loads of abuse at the time for behaving in a way that was perceived to be gay.

must be something about leeds, wasnt that why they bugged out of the temple newsham site when the thing happened a while back? think is was early 00's or something!?

of those in that list, how many would be considered 'out out' in popular culture?

Yeah only half of them were out out at the time. Morrissey is still pretending he could be either way

in someways it could be said that it needed the more liberal 90s for them to become more able to be open about their sexuality (even if their record sales peaked 10 years before).

Loads in the 90s tbf, I think a lot of them just didn't market themselves as much as they did in the 80s so aren't associated as much. Obviously a few who are well known for being gay as well.

Bill Joe Armstrong (Green Day)
Michael Stipe (REM)
Simon Fowler (OCS)
Sinead O Connor
Skin (Skunk Anansie)
Steven Gately
Ricky Martin
Fred Schneider (B52s, older than 90s tbf but wasn't until 90s when they went mainstream)

There will be loads form pop bands that I just dont know as well tbf and also Geroge Michael, Elton John etc were all still going strong in this era.

You also had rumours that the Likes of Kurt Cobain were bi-sexual.

I didn’t know the Green Day singer was gay. I’m sure I’ve seen a vid of him with his kids so presumed he was straight

Honestly not too sure if I had to be honest. It's always full of kids after their GCSE's having their first time away without mammy and daddy though acting like pricks.

It would certainly be interesting to imagine what would have happened in Rock if Freddie and Rob Halford were openly gay in the early 80s.
Freddie was never out at all which seems beyond bizarre when you look at Queen. I mean…the name of the band
But then again they grew up with it being illegal so no surprise they’d be cagey. Ditto Cliff and Dusty Springfield

that used to be a great site. the riot which turned out to be the last year was really bad. tents were getting set on fire, small explosions were happening all over because people were throwing gas cannisters on fires and burning portaloos. I heard people discussing setting fire to my tent so I thought enough was enough and I got up with my heart pounding. When I got out of my tent I wondered what other people were watching and on the other side of the stream was a line of riot police and the sergeant was shouting orders as they clashed their shields with the batons to intimidate people to disperse.

One of the cars next to them had a scaffolding pole through it's windscreen.

after the bands finished at the new site the lights started swaying as people were trying to push the poles over, some were trying to push the security towers over. it's horrible when it kicks off.

I was there that year. Was goosed on the Sunday so head back early and went to kip. Heard people yelling and some banging about but didn't bother getting up.

Woke up in morning and my tent was surrounded by like 100s of tins of beans and shit people had brought and didn't eat so we're just slinging about, half the campsite had been on fire, there was burnt out burger vans and shit. I'd slept through the lot. Good times.

i was 8 when they played live aid, i don't think the studio 54 scene really had much influence in 1985s washington for the average primary school kid... i certainly don't remember thinking this was camp...

Similar! Was probably close to desth but too knackered to care.

Portaloos were exploding firing shite allover and somebody was firing fireworks at a police helicopter ffs! 😂
