Defoe on Moyes at Sunderland

Giving Moyes the benefit of the doubt, I think those signings were a case of bringing in players he felt he knew and could trust, to influence the dressing room. Both Pienaar and Lescott were free agents when they signed, and were only on short contracts. They certainly won't have broken the bank.

Again, ya could see what he was trying to do with Oviedo and Gibson, but it turned out to be a bit of a disaster.

I wont argue that Moyes didnt do anything other than a thoroughly shit job regardless of circumstances but there were in my opinion extenuating circumstances that people wont consider:
1) Every year prior we were perennial strugglers despite previous managers having an open cheque book in terms of fees and wages. A great finish the season before was no guarantee of success the following year. History should tell us that.
2) Short had made his mind up he was going to sell the club and his cost cutting exercise started then. fees for players would be made available but the wage bill which was huge had to be cut.
3) Cutting wages meant we couldn't attract quality players even if we could still spend large fees.
4) From the previous year we had Kaboul and M'Vila who were fantastic. Kaboul left due to personal circumstances and any replacement was going to have significantly less wages.
5) We could have signed M'Vila but on 80k per week massive savings in wages would have to be made elsewhere so we went down a cheaper wage option.
6) This was the year of the biggest TV rights deal in history. Every other club in the league were spending untold riches while we had to manage our wage bill which impacted on the players Moyes got in.

That said the signings were still abysmal and many managers have achieved relative success with far worse hands than him but those circumstances should still be recognised and often arent.

Before our game today

“He was brilliant to be honest. People always spoke about David Moyes being miserable but then he came and he really impressed me. His sessions, everything was with the ball, little rondos, possessions, attention to detail was unbelievable. Set-pieces, and all the meetings. What impressed me was how he treated the senior players. He wanted you to control the dressing room. He was just fantastic and it’s not surprised me the job he has done here.”
Defoe just falling into line with other pundits who dare not ctriicise a player or manager. Disappointing.

May be true, maybe just playing the media game.

He was still a horrific manager here, with a dogshite attitude and made hopeless, lazy signings.
