Tony's from Blyth. I went on the back of his bike a few times , a kawasaki 900 if i remember right. If Don knows him could you get him to tell Tony i was asking after him. I lost all of Tony's contact details back then when mobile phones weren't really around. If you could get a contact email for Tony that'd be great. Pm it though!!
SF: Special Forces.
On the first tour i was pretty much alongside Tony, no need for names, he'll know who i am!!
Ill see what i can do mate...
Told Gillan that id posted what he said.
He's made up that so many people appreciated it!!

No problems. Tony will know me. He's been ozzy's personal assistant for 30 years or so.
I was thinking earlier how people's lives take totally different courses based on a few decisions, mine included.

Hope the gig went well.

would he know you as piston, or.....? If not, PM me and i'll pass it on to don who can pass it on etc
Gig was great btw!
Blows my mind that we do 150 plus shows a year, and always sold out. Amazing. By the way, check out the latest purple album 'Now what'. Its a corker

Haaa! Think I still might have me blue velvet jacket. Probs stinks of a combination of hippy oil and Friday night at the Mecca.:)

the blue velvet jacket (and the afghan jackets) are long gone but the hippy oil is still here.
one fact about purple, they were booked at reading rock fest and got bottled off....guy that booked them, to save his face said 'oh they are just a bit before their time...'
if only he knew eh?

Hope they are back to form - saw them twice, with Free at Sunderland and then in Singapore in the 90's. The latter was a terrible gig and put me off them for a long time - strange lineup mind!

Aye, looking back I must have looked a bloody clip at times. I only have the joss sticks now to remind me but the funny thing about smell, it doesn't half stick in the memory and takes me right back to those days. Didn't know that about Purple at Reading. Which one was it? I was at Reading 79', Motorhead and all that, brill weekend and plenty of cans and bottles being hurled at the stage then ana'll. Happy days eh?

little known musical fact, the band had played the Mecca and were having a post gig pint in the Smugglers when Richie Blackmore tossed a still lit tab into the sea and just before it fizzled out they got the inspiration for smoke on the water

I was at the Mecca when they played there....but whoever told you about the 'Tab on the Wear' ;) was pulling ya leg.

The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on 4 December 1971 Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio—referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino(referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire when somebody in the audience fired a flare gun into the rattan covered ceiling, as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line.[9][10] The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bass guitarist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel.

They are playing amazing at the moment. Ive worked with them for 9 years, and this is the best Ive heard them. They recorded the latest album with Bob Ezren ('the wall', Kiss, etc) and its given them a new lease of life. We actually did the Dubai Jazz fest last year, which isnt so far from you (presuming your name alludes to you living in AD!)

How is the guitar tech flightcase touring? We made it for Lothar (plus a few other cases) when you did the Dubai Jazz Gig last year after a load of your kit got trashed in the floods in US. A backstage pic of it in use would be good unless its fooked of course in which case it wasn't me that made it must have been someone else ;)

Another interesting fact-up until 1 tour ago, the band used to come out on stage to Prokofiev -Dance of the knights (a version recorded by don)..... It was dons choice...he just failed to tell the others his reason for using that particular piece of music!! Used to make us both laugh every night![DOUBLEPOST=1391394789][/DOUBLEPOST]

Saw an interview just the other day with Gillan who was saying how much better the band were without Blackmore and they cut to Blackmore who said he wanted to attack Gillan and beat him up.

Seems they still aren't best of mates. Mind I reckon Gillan would take him out fairly easily even though he seems to be the more easy going/friendly bloke.

@gabbiadini1 do you know the (Mandrake) root cause behind this ongoing feud? I've wondered for years.

He can say what he wants but I'll still have zero interest in them without Blackmore.
