Dava McCamm aka Paul Davison of Cheer Up Peter Reid Fame RIP

RIP, Paul, he lived near me at Penshaw, we went to school together at Usworth Comp. We were both Sunderland daft in a school that was 50/50. We both played rugby for the school team, and I remember later he played cricket for Washington. His father used to be on one of the turnstiles at the Fulwell end. He was very intelligent and appeared on countdown. Paul always had a smile on his face and that is how I will remember him.

Regarding footy tales, Dava was at OT that day in 74 when a reported 10,000 Safc descended on Manchester.
United fans didn't take kindly to the Scoreboard End being filling up with Safc and launched a huge attack with a huge dust up both on the terraces and on the pitch. Dava who was one of many forced out on to the pitch, pulled out one of the corner flags in order to defend himself from the manc neanderthals !
No doubt there's some on here who will back this story up .
RIP Dava, a true Safc loyal to be the end.
Only saw later stages, scoreboard end gates had been shut, a few of us were on the Stratford End ( only turnstiles open).

H/t was funny as fook, underneath the terrace, knowing nods everywhere 🤣

RIP lad

It has really upset me to hear this sad news. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. In my younger days I used to go to sports/football "talk-ins" with Paul and a few other regulars. He was a smashing lad. His views/written articles on footy, cricket & SAFC in particular were always well-considered and first-rate. Intelligent and good craic, I remember when he went on Countdown. It might've been the audition for that programme where he told me he was asked to sing a karaoke song. He chose to sing "Zippedy-do-dah" 😂 and carried it off with aplomb - a piece of cake after Cheer Up Peter Reid. Fondly remembered and will be sadly missed. RIP Paul.

Was best mates with him at school and while playing cricket at Washington, he was part of a group of mainly teenagers at time time who saved Washington Cricket Club from going under in 1976.

He was also best man at my wedding. The fall which gave him his head injury happened just before our 25th wedding anniversary . He will be missed my many RIP mate

Also wanted to add

His dad was on the gates at Roker and at 15 we went to the 73 final on the supporters coach I remember the day and every thing we did. Also remember sharing a hotel room with him for the 1985 Norwich League cup Final and how down he was after the game.

Had some of my best days with him.

And Fifteen to One.

Paul also got to the final of the only series of Sporting Mastermind on the Beeb - dishy Des Lynam was the question master.

Furthermore, Paul's team got to the final of the BBC Radio 5 sport quiz - Helen Chamberlain of Soccer AM fame hosted and asked the questions on that show, with James Alexander-Gordon (the bloke who read out the football scores out at 5pm every Saturday for years) acting as scorer.

RIP Mackie. One of the best. The fondest of memories travelling around the country watching the lads during the 70’s. Thoughts with family at this very sad time. Enduring memory of him in his trademark sheepskin coat!

Yeah remember him being on the Sporting Mastermind, Tampa Bay Buccaneers was is specialist subject for one of the rounds iirc, he knew about football as well as real football! Some lovely things said on this thread, he obviously was well liked and respected by many people, isn't that what everyone wants when they are no longer with us? Hopefully some comfort to his family at this very sad time.

It very much is.

Sorry to hear about Paul’s passing.

He was a nice fella and always had time for footy and cricket craic.

I worked with him at CBC in the 80s and regularly played cricket against him when Vaux joined the Coast League.

RIP Paul

Such sad sad news mate. Shed a few tears when heard news today 😥😥.
Got to know Paul Davison thru the Supporters Action For Change group in 1995.
He was also involved with me, Tom Lynn, Ian Chester, Steve Atkinson, Martyn McFadden and Gary Raine on the Cheer up Peter Reid record in 96.
An absolutely cracking lad, good cricketer and MLF.
Absolutely tragic what happened to him, and my heart goes out to Elaine and his son and all those who loved him.
I'm sure the likes of John Mitchell, John McIlvaney and many others will be as gutted as me, Chess, Akky etc, although in reality it is probably a blessing that his suffering is over at long last.
Paul, it was a pleasure knowing you and may you rest in peace content in the knowledge you were loved and respected by all those who knew you.
Well said ! Sorry for the loss of someone who seemed a great m8 and the kind of character that makes our fan base very special. RIP lad and condolences to his family
