RR Data & Analytics: How Sunderland can improve their fortunes through efficient player recruitment

" We will recommend a move towards playing a front foot style of football at a high tempo. A quick and mobile strike force, serviced by short passes from a high pressing, tenacious midfield, with service into the box provided by attacking full backs". This is where we've been going wrong. Who knew?
Isn't this the default 'how football should be played' way now, I wonder how many teams they dont recommend this to?

The thing is when this is the default, the footballers who fit the system become more expensive. Every side wants good Fullbacks, teams put a premium fullback. Every side wants a high press, teams put a premium on tenacious midfielders.

The real value would be to predict future trends. Look at Leicester, they are playing well with a more direct, counter attacking approach. The players they bring in don't have such a premium, but every player they bring in suits their system. Because they play well in their system their value increases.

Don't look for the en vogue. Think outside the box. The value is two fold; 1) you can pick up players cheaper, 2) you'll be playing a system that your opponents aren't used to facing, therefore will have more difficulty countering.

This has to be done in house. Employing an outside company with carbon copy solutions is very short-termist.

They missed out " a goalkeeper who never makes a bad pass or mis-controls a back pass

It's a garbage article with flawed data supplied to RR so they can try and use it to store up trouble after it was rejected by the club, presumably because its garbage.

The principle is ok but given the source data it ends up looking ridiculous.

There are multiple analytics companies out there and this is not a good one.

Shows how well Bob Murray was running the club when no other chairman has managed to get such value from players since he left.

Even under mic Mac we should never really have gotten promoted because the players we had weren't particularly good on their own but were part of a good system.

As for their "desired formula" for safc it would have been easier if they'd just said Liverpool.

Yes and no. For where we are at present - and to provide an income stream going forward - setting safc as a sort of middleman is a compelling identity. If we were set up to develop players with the characteristics to move in to teams higher up the pyramid - and able to de-risk these players for elite clubs - we would be able to generate sales, revenue and also set up a virtuous cycle where we would see players wanting to join as we’d be a key waypoint on the pathway. Look at the way Southampton worked in the past or the RB system at present. They accept their place in the food chain and supercharge their progress as a result.
