Danny Batth on way out? (squad depth discussion)

Alese has only played 12 games in his career, I think it'd be a silly gamble to get rid of Bathe, I think Alese will be a bench player for a while at first.
Or perhaps the manager will see how they all go in training and then select the players he thinks are demonstrating the best form and fitness, probably altering the combinations, dependent upon what the main challenge the immediate opposition present.

I think that the premise of the thread is that Baath might feel marginalised and disappointed being one of four and possibly not being selected for every game. However, any disappointment he might feel will be largely assuaged when his salary goes into the bank each month.

Does anybody else feel this is now probable?

In Wright, Ballard and Alese we have three natural CBs, we also have O’Nien and Winnie who can play there. Good defences are built on strong partnerships but unless we‘re going with three CBs I’m not convinced we could rotate those four (Batth, Wright, Ballard and Alese) and balance player satisfaction with a strong defensive partnership.

Anyone expecting us to go with a back 5 this season?
No!

Absolutely nee chance. Winchester is the obvious one to move on

Let me try and explain my working out. Let’s say we play a 2 the whole season, the worst case scenario.

46 games, 2 playing spots, 92 starts.

Wright starts 40
Batth starts 30
Ballard starts 20
Alese starts 2

Obviously this can be offset by cup games, sub appearances and playing 3 at the back.
46 games, 2* playing spots = 92 starts

Even on an even divide, that’s 23 league starts in games for each of the four and takes no account of substitute appearances. Taking into account injury lay-offs, suspensions, loss of form that might not be too far off the mark.

In practice, some will start more than 23 games, some will start a game but be subbed off, some may start a game at right-back or left-back.

I don’t think having four specialist centre-backs is an unreasonable position for a squad, where up to 16 players might be involved, particularly as centre-back is a position that is frequently beset by the aforementioned injuries and suspensions.

*Assuming a back-four every game

Winchester will be peddled imo.

I think we'll sign another DM and peddle him or O'Nein. Neil would prefer Winchester, but O'Nein may be more sellable.
I'd prefer O'Nien. I'm not a huge fan of him ability wise but he's better than Winchester. Saying that like they're both very likable lads who would run through brick walls for us.

Onien is more useful to us, younger, more robust, and covers more positions than Winchester. I'd be disappointed if we sold Onien and kept Winchester.

Be daft to. Have 2 experienced lads and 2 young uns. Might see the 2 young lads at CB in cups if we get the right tie. Be surprised to see them together in the league very often

I think Winchester's a better footballer with the ball, but O'Nein will likely have more impact on a championship game just because of his engine. Neither are really at this level, but both as you say excellent professionals.

We need a new CM for the 2 in a 4-2-3-1 imo. Neil and Matete are still projects; whilst Evans will surely miss games. Sign one, peddle one of the above.

Aye, tend to agree.

Definitely agree about bringing one more in. It's as important as a striker and keeper imo.

No, I think it is very unlikely. I don't really understand how anyone could really come to this conclusion.

I think we are done now at centre back and have really good balance.

Four centre backs. Two experienced, hard as nails types who have each played hundreds of games. Two promising young players (one of whom has played loads at this level). Three right footed, one left footed. One of them (Wright) is fine as cover at right back, another (Alese) can play as cover at left back. We have the players to play with three at the back, or in a back four.

The likes of Winchester or O'Nien should only be used there in a real emergency.

If we lost any of those we'd just have to replace them. So no, I don't think Batth is on the way out.

It will be bath or weight with one of the younger lads or in the middle of them both
