Dan Neil

I like Neil, if he could improve his shooting he would be the complete midfielder. Every other game he seems to knock one into stands from just outside the area!

His shooting is pretty horrific like. Could do with aiming for maybe 5 a season, not too big an ask. His all round game though has improved massively though and deserves the praise

Would love to know what people have been watching to say he’s improved massively this season  he hasn’t.

And just to be clear, that’s not a criticism of Neil.

He’s definitely one that gets taken for granted. If we signed him from some other championship club we wouldn’t shut up about how good a player he is, but being an academy player it’s different, for some reason

Quietly brilliant again today. Most completed passes, 94% pass completion. Gets about the pitch, gets stuck in and always looks for the right pass.

111 career appearances for the lads at 21. The kids only gonna get better.

Fizzed a cracking pass into Pritchard in the first half, proper line breaker.

Shame Pritchard neither pass or shot and held onto the ball for too long.

Anyone who’s played the game at a decent level or has a decent understanding of modern football who has been trying to explain what he does for the team while being asked to play a completey different role because of injury’s and squad depth etc at such a young age can start feeling smug.

He’s 21. Played over 100 games for a club with high demands and improves week on week month after month.

He’s a safc fan and has took a lot of unnecessary abuse because he’s learning on the job.

Lost count of the times fans absolutely slaughtered him for losing the ball in bad positions which isn’t a great habit but the same fans thought evans is a better player than Dan when he’s shown for the 2 years previous that he’s not a ptach on the lad.
Evans would never lose the ball in those areas because he doesn’t have the balls to take risks and play under pressure.

Dan neil has had to learn that and has improved week after week.
He’s stepped up and is starting to look like a top midfielder in this league that if for example we had signed him from a club like boro Norwich Coventry etc etc we’d be fuckin buzzing that we’d nicked one of their top prospects with stats that are frightening.

If he can add a few more goals to his game we’ve got a big money player on our hands.

Evans is a good player as well, just plays a slightly different position and style. I agree wholeheartedly about Ekwah and Neil but that doesn't mean that Evans doesn't have a role to play in some games. Same with Matete, imho. He hasn't really had that run of games that others have had to let him develop and learn from mistakes. We don't have any bad players in our squad (can't judge new lads simply because they haven't played much yet but they look to have talent as well).

Dan Neil sorts the fans out who know a quality footballer when they see one and those that dont. Sorts the knowledgeable types from the goals and assists types. Cracking player.

Very easy to forget hes still only 21. Hopefully he plays in the top flight for us, as it stands it'd have to be north of £20m to get him off us like.

Very intelligent midfielder. Living his best life at the moment as a Sunderland fan too being one of the first names on the team sheet.

If the club’s upwards trajectory can match his, it would be fantastic to see him stay with us

Monty’s 627 appearances is a very tall order but Ashurst and Ned Doig were around the 450 mark - he could get there by the age of 30…!

I think some people view the game like kids, in that it’s all about fancy skills and goals and assists. Reminds me of my son’s football team when he was 9 or 10. One kid on the team was head and shoulders above the rest - he always picked a good pass, read danger and was always there to help out, just generally bossed games. When it came to players’ player of the season he didn’t get a look in. They all voted for the kid who tried to take on the whole opposition or the one who stood in the penalty box and got a load of tap ins.

Dan Neil is a very good player and will no doubt play in the PL soon, but by the same age (about 2m from their 22nd birthdays), Henderson had played 100 Premier League games and already had an England cap. And he improved a lot after that as well.

Dan Neil is a long long way from that level.
When you put it like that I may have been getting a bit over excited

I think people are getting a bit carried away like.

Good player with the potential to be a very good one, but I don’t think we’re seeing a massive difference from last season.

The way he has time on the ball against high temp difficult opposition, in very challenging leagues, is a real sign of class, and most fans have seen this. He can play at the very highest level, due to that innate ability to make time and create space.

Massive progress this season in his awareness of who is around him when he is in possession. Doing great.
