Cycle route Durham to South Shields.

i work in Belmont and would like to have a go at cycling to and from work when the weather is good, do I have any options? I would assume head for the coast, can I avoid major roads and have a decent safe route?
 


Head for hetton back along the 690. Then burdon lane to ryhope then foller the sea north.

Saying that, Burdon lane isnt that quiet and barely room for 2 cars in places so I wouldnt fancy cycling it. I wouldn't fancy cycling up Houghton cut on the 690 either though.

You can get from Hetton to ryhope on cycle paths, or coast to ryhope then cycle path to haswell and go in the back way. Few different options, or over Moorsley to Pittington. Canny ride from Shields like.
 
Some of the route back from Durham towards Sunderland is unlit so if riding on dark nights it can be canny. Modern bike lights are feckn nuclear powered though so hopefully you'll be OK.
