Having a situation where ( as in the past ) we had Real Madrid v athletico Madrid, or Spurs v Liverpool in à CL final I think is ludicrous.

Didn’t Liverpool play forest in the 70s or 80s in the European cup. One were league winners the other European cup holders. Granted they both had to win something to get there rather than the top4 or 5 situation we have now.

Shame UEFA got rid of that tournament. The concept of all the Cup Winners playing each other was a grand idea.

Thing is a lot of Cup winners qualify for Europe via league position

I was at the Sporting home leg as me mam wadnt allow me to go to the vasas one due to mad crowd expectations. Mind me da probably didn’t want me interfering with him and his marras drinking.

Spirting were boring time wasting anti football though they did win the ECWC that season. We gave them their hardest games apparently.

This for me as a 13/14 year old.
Although my uncle did go to the Vasas away game with a tour company.
Brought me a pennant back.

Probably the same type of pennant I bought on eBay ten years or so back with a real old school vasas badge.
Bought from a widow in an auld Durham colliery village. Had an interesting PM back n forth with her about it. Her husband went and she was ower the moon it had gone to a SAFC fan. I told her it’d end up back in the NE after my final whistle had been blown if not before which she appreciated.

I’ve been to Budapest twice now and scoured the flea markets for programmes but nowt Hannibal I’m afraid.
Be great if vasas qualified alongside us. Fingers crossed.

There were too many beaten finalists and bottom half teams qualifying for uefas liking towards the end. Even 2nd division teams…..the cheeky bastards.

With the possibility of getting in Europe, is there anyone on here went to our games against sporting and vasas was at both games but can't remember a lot about them. I was 24 at the time.

Aye .Canny on the first game and gamesmanship by Sportings Ball boys on the away leg.

Might sound old school but I think European cup/ CL and cup winners /europa cup have been devalued by the number of teams able to qualify.
For me only the league champions and fa cup winners should the only eligible competitors

The European Cup was an elite competition and the UEFA cup was excellent as the largest European competition and full of excellent teams finishing 2nd - 4th in their league.

The Europa League is the one that has been really diminished as a result. Villa, Forest, Freiburg and Braga were this years semi finalists. In the year before the first Champions League expansion it was Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Bordeaux (top French side with Zidane, Lizerazu and Dugarry at the time) and randomly Slavia Prague, whose team included 6 of the Czech Republic squad that made the Euro 96 final. They scalped Roma on the way.

The pennant was a ‘souvenir’ from the travel company. Not an official Vasas one.

Vasas are in the Hungarian second level this season. They’ve won it and will be promoted for next season….so no qualification for the European comps.

Aaaaah. I’m on my holidays at the moment but I’ll take a pic and send you it when I get back to see if it’s the same if that’s alright. If I can find it that is, it should be in my ever expanding football shite box in the loft.

I was at both home games 14 years old, behind the goal in the Fulwell. My first thoughts were these foreigners are massive.
