Crowdfunder - First Class Futures

I saw a tweet about this the morn. It's all about developing a nursery on land adjacent to the ground.

It sounds just like, unless I'm reading it wrong, that they're raising £150k with £50k of that coming from the crowdfunder thing while the £150k is match funding meaning they will be providing the same from their own resources. Plus of course they'll have to fund the revenue costs of it from here on in.

Reading some comments on here over the past months it sounded like they didn't have two copper to rub together so I'm a little surprised.

However I've contributed anyway, good luck to them.

Without sounding like a miserable get is this needed? There are plenty of underused grounds around the region and I don't see the problem with the Academy playing away or at Durham Uni. Women can do the same.

I'd rather the £150k went towards upgrading a current club or two's facilities and maybe saving them from folding.

There are plenty of grounds but I'm not sure many are underused. The advantage of an adjacent ground is that conditions should mirror those at the main ground and use can be made of it's facilities.

Plenty of grounds aren't played on on Sundays, others are free every other week. I just think it's more important to stop clubs folding and keep the playing pool high than some daft luxury ground.

You raise a good question marra about the need for such a facility, particularly when the club has no money. It could be that because it is planned to be a community facility that it wont cost them very much and will add to their assets on the balance sheet. I do know that whenever the lads and lasses play say U12 fixtures at the various grounds eg Hetton Lyons etc. that there is usually a small charge for using the facilities. Cant imagine its much though.

Doubt it. We pay 75 to use Hylton for a 20 over slog midweek.

The way I read the costs it is

£100k from DCC + £50k from crowdfunder + £150k matchfunding from grants etc = £300k

So out of that there's acquisition of the land, I presume the LA owns that and also the construction of some kind of pavillion, perhaps some equipment. Just guessing tho.

I know they have space for outside nets currently but space looks pretty tight especially for bowler's run up, maybe the thought is to move those to the new area and the old nets could become additional parking.

As far as I'm aware the nets are staying where they are although they are looking to add two new ones near to where the floodlit pitch is to compensate for the 2 that were lost.

I have no idea what the DCB pay for the bairns age group teams. I guess it varies from club to club.

£75?!?!?!?!?!?! Bloody hell! We'd do it for £60 :cool::cool::cool:

Possibly even less depending on what arrangement you required, few post match aperitifs? :D

Ryhope and Houghton were cheaper when we played there. Had a few games at east rainton 3 seasons ago and they were reasonable. Maidan castle are procey iirc

Could just give Durham Uni a fraction of that a year and use The Racecourse for the majority of Second XI, Women and Academy matches.
Durham uni is a lovely ground.

Remember seeing Sachin playing there for the Yorkies in 1991/2 iirc

Womens team used Durham City for all their home County Championship games last year.

Yorkshire built an "Academy ground" some years ago at New Rover in Leeds. They still play some of the younger age group games there but the Academy now play at Weetwood, the Leeds University ground.
The Racecourse ground is far better than Weetwood and is only used for half the season.
If Durham CCC had a better relationship with Durham University then this "arrangement" would save an awful lot of money.
Any money raised under this initiative would, in my opinion, be better used to help the struggling clubs in the North East.

I'd rather the money went to help progressive clubs, not struggling ones.

Teams like Kimblesworth have wasted money paying players when they should have invested in their facilities, so why should they get help when they brought things on themselves ?

Some clubs have been doing that sort of thing for years and don't deserve assistance.

Why do we have a poor relationship with the uni?

I've heard Cooke and Fowler arent best mates.
Yes I heard that but maybe we have some sort of link now Cook has more of a background role as the Uni bowler Milnes played regularly for Durham 2nds last season once the Uni. fixtures finished.

I'm a bit surprised with most comments on here. I mean the Academy came third bottom in the PL having won only one game and are also gypsies without a proper home.

Obviously clubs need support but the County Club should also invest in itself too and £350k is a drop in the ocean.

The Academy team has a home....The Riverside. I've no idea why they dont use the facility more.

As for their ability to compete in the league; I've said before on here that from next season the team is no longer going to jam packed with younguns. I'm told that there will be some experienced club players drafted in to help them along. Sounds to me as though there will be less places available in the academy in the future as they get a bit more ruthless. We shall see.

You have a point that the now there's hardly ever 1st XI fixtures on a Saturday the NEPL Academy team could pay there as they did in their earlier days but surely the problem is having a home for the younger academy teams which makes the nursery ground imperative.
