Criticism of Raheem Sterling

That's fair enough. Maybe my standards are just higher. He's just an average, at best, player. Great, very good, excellent is used far too often to describe average players these days. He's not in the same league as some of the players who have gone before him.

I respect your opinion though.
Sorry but hes miles better than average at best. You must be the only person in the world who rates his ability at that level.

Nothing to do with race just poor punditry when there is no other defence Wright can come out with !

Same old issue though there hasn’t been many people look outstanding in International football, Beckham Gerrard Scholes they all had their moments n sometimes produced results but never looked as good as they should.

I’d say it’s because of the overall quality and skill level isn’t obviously as high as the Man City squad etc some blokes on here could look decent in that side as surrounded by the skill, vision and ability of Bernardo, Silva, Aguero etc a players levels are instantly raised and made to look better

When that isn’t there and these English players have to create something themselves rather than have the hard work done for them it’s a different story !

Having said that I think he was shite in the WC yes he had pace and ran at the opposition but never done anything much with it all, there must have been a players that would do that and then use the ball well or not lose/waste it

We knock him when he’s utterly shite for England

Which is just about every game
I couldn't give a toss how he plays for Man City. His finishing was poor at the World Cup and I for one was shouting abuse at the tv screen in frustration at him fannying about in front of goal. Nowt to do with race, more to do with Southgate continually picking him when he wasn't doing very well.

Not at all. Most football fans I know think he is average at best, in fact that is being generous as the words 'shit/shite' are frequently used. Maybe it's because they, like me, are of an older generation and have higher standards both on and off the field of play.

Absolutely staggering.

He should chose his words more carefully then.
He did. He explicitly states the football criticism is something all players have to deal with.
Maybe people should try actually reading the article.
The witch hunt on Sterling has nothing to do with his footballing ability.

There was the time he had the audacity to buy his mother a house, with a lovely sink tbf, weeks after England and he personally had a poor Euros. Headline "Obscene Raheem" (S*n).

But also the Times he is was too cheap.
"Man City star earns £200,000 a week...but takes £80 EasyJet flight from holiday". (Daily Mail). Then there was the time he went to Primark with his missus and was blamed for treating her poorly (Basically everyone). Or the time he went to Poundland. He once got breakfast from Greggs. All these are apparently stories.

The time his car was dirty. "Man City ace drives FILTHY £50k Mercedes" (Star)

The time Sky disgracefully inserted again into this quote. "When I was two, my father died from being gunned down to death. I made a promise to myself I would never touch a gun (again) in my life time."

The time he was pictured with a woman who wasn't his girlfriend in Jamaica, who it turns out is a family friend. "Prem Rat of the Caribbean" (S*n)

The time he dared to eat food after being voted the second best young player in the country."Raheem Sterling treats himself to a spot of breakfast after missing out on being crowned Young Player of the Year the night before at PFA awards" (Mail)

"How many children does Raheem Sterling have? When did his father die?" (S*n) - 2 it turns out.

The time his face was used above an article on a weekend of London gun crime in the news section. He was aboard.

'The life and times of Three Lions footie idiot Raheem' - (Sun), why, who knows?

There are many more. It's clear the press have an agenda against him beyond his football.

Had the desired response too - Man Utd fan jailed for unprovoked racist attack on Raheem Sterling

The witch hunt on Sterling has nothing to do with his footballing ability.

But it has, if he wasn't a highly paid footballer, playing for Man City & England he wouldn't be in the papers, one follows the other...

Despite the standard of football a couple of decades ago being mostly dogshit?

I agree with Wright.

It isn't about his ability it's all of the shitty articles about his private life.

We've seen articles criticising him for taking a private jet for his holiday then another article mocking him for flying on a budget airline.

The press have even published a story criticising him for buying his mother a f***ing sink.

The Sun even linked 2 teenagers being stabbed to death in Sheffield and Northampton with his gun tattoo.

When Sterling released a statement on his gun tattoo saying "I made a promise to myself that I would never touch a gun" Sky Sports added the word again on the end of the sentence.

He might be a tit but the way our media single him out is disgraceful.

""People say you are playing the racism card, but you give me a good reason why Raheem Sterling gets the stick he gets for just being a footballer.""

Good reason - He's the most wasteful England player I can remember. Ever.

You didn't listen to the show? It was a discussion about the off field stuff. It went like this (just listened back).

General discussion about why Sterling plays better for City than England (which all, including Wright, acknowledge). Wright says it's like Pogba with France and mentioned Pogba saying he feels more comfortable and happy there. All agree. Chris Sutton asks 'why is he kicked so much by people, why the nastiness?' and says it must be hard to play under such conditions.

Kelly Cates says 'there are off-field criticisms of Raheem Sterling that seems to be skewed against him more than other players get'. Sutton replying, 'I think that affected his WC performance. I don't understand it. He was a top player for Man City but there seems to be an element of people in this country that take delight in kicking Raheem Sterling. I don't get it...'

So this was the context of the discussion when Wright stepped in. They were unequivocally talking about the off-field criticism.
Wright then suggests the obvious, makes clear he's talking about the non-football stuff - as above - then says 'there is an element of people at the high end of media that want to keep that guy down. Simple.'
