With Yorkshire signing Kraigg Brathwaite and Essex getting Neil Wagner back for the final three games of the season - does it make a mockery somewhat of the whole overseas player thing?

Now this isn't a dig at individual counties, but when I saw these announcements something didn't sit right with me.

Essex, in fairness have had this in place all along, Wagner started the season with them, Amir cane after the Champions Trophy and was always leaving before September when Wagner was booked to come back.

Not sure if Yorkshire had a deal with Brathwaite in place but that's a strange one to me, even out of form, Lyth and Lees would be a better option IMO anyway. If I was a Yorkie I'd think it was money wasted.

Should there be a cut off point for signing players? Maybe I'm old fashioned, because I've said on here many times that I prefer an overseas man who comes for the whole season and plays all formats - but I appreciate that isn't the modern way.

Mind I DEFINTELY want us to sign Latham for the full season in 2018.

I do have a problem with cricketing mercenaries travelling the world and playing the odd game here and there

For all the "poverty Pleading" by counties they do waste plenty of money on short term overseas players.
I sometimes wonder if these counties actually spent as much time developing their own players as they do trying to sign foreign players to play in the place of them they would be in a better place.

at the same time you want to see the best players in the world.. sangakarra for a recent example turning out for us, you wouldn't want to take that away.

Would we ever get into a position that a country with cash .. who was in difficulty regarding relegation or missing out on promotion would cancel the contract of their existing overseas (not just for injury but because they were either out of form or maybe he was a batsman and they decided they wanted a bowler or vice versa) and bring in another overseas for a couple of games.

If so that should be outlawed if it's not already.

But it wouldn't be just any county ... some have cash some don't .... and I'm not just thinking about Durham here, although maybe if this new comps works as advertised all counties may have the cash in a few years.

I think what Durham did was fair enough ... ie set out as the start of the season to have an overseas for part way and then another for the remainder. I also think it would be fine for a player to come in for T20 only.

But, yea, what Yorkshire have done doesn't sit right with me either.

I'm sure there used to be a cut off date for players moving, although maybe that has changed. Seemingly so with players signing this week.

Which was my argument - they have Lyth and Lees opening, two home grown lads. However if Brathwaite comes in to open, one of those seemingly gets dropped.

Yes but not just coming in for a couple of matches here and there. Sanga was slightly different because he played for Durham for nought as he just wanted some practice in English conditions before the Sri Lankan tour here.
The biggest concern is the growing amount of cricketers who are filling county side who are reared overseas and have no connection with youth cricket in this country never mind their county youth system.

I see your point, and do agree there is something not right about Yorkshire signing this lad up, but at the same time the best and most exciting players in the world playing in the county championship can only be a good think, and the opportunity for great players to be seen by county fans is great.

remember at hove chatting with a kent fan who had driven a canny few miles just to come watch sangakarra play. good for the game.

IMO overseas players contracts should be sorted before the season begins. Its a joke signing them as the season progresses, as they can be used to fill short term gaps. Get to the T20 play off Finals Day? Battings a bit short? Well why not sign McCullum or Gayle? Also applies to CC if some high impact batting/bowling may be required towards the end of the season.

As for Latham well hopefully he will be retained, according to Lewis it just depends on his 2018 NZ commitments.
