Crap players you had a soft spot for.

McAteer for me. Remember him telling Keane to put it in his fookin book after he got sent off.

Doug Collins. In 78 against Ipswich (IIRC), he went on a mazy run beating 5 or 6 of their players. He was running towards our goal, mind you, but I thought it looked class.

I'm going to say Craig Russell, although I don't actually think he was crap.

However, he didn't make the grade for us (although Reidy should have used him more), and did nothing elsewhere.

I loved his commitment, he scored some lovely goals, and never acted "big-time." Wish he'd got more of a chance for us.

I know he played loads as a sub (about 20 IIRC) but in the first Premiership season he only started about 9 games and he was joint top scorer on 4 IIRC. He wasn't the answer to all our woes, but Reid playing the midfield of Ball and Bracewell in the top flight, with Stewart up front and Agnew wide it's amazing we scored any goals at all. Russell with a bit of pace would have been an improvement on what we were often playing, but for some reason Kelly, Stewart and Mullen seemed to get more chances in various roles without delivering. We enjoyed our best sequence of results over the season in the 3 game spell Russell, Rae and Smith played, but none were given a decent run.

Also think Frank Clark playing him left wingback in a Citeh side plummeting down the leagues did his career no favours either. That and a few injuries more or less put paid to it.

Great info, and sad to read. Did that three game run include a 3-0 against Chelsea, where Russell scored a deflected long shot? And Bally met a Gray cross with the best flying header I've ever seen? Or did I just dream it all?!
