You cannot change anyone's place of birth. I was born in Jarrow, County Durham
You can't take that away from me cos some politician decided to re jig the borders

Correct , these borders are centurys old ie Co, Durham , Northumberland etc
Sunderland , along with Gateshead , Jarrow etc were in Co Durham till some bored politician decided to change history.

wrong, you're thinking of the council
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyne_and_Wear

Let’s get this right. “Tyne and Wear” was invented in 1974 and exists today only as a “Ceremonial” county because it has a Lord Lieutenant and therefore technically still exists in law. It also exists as a way of describing the regional administrative area of a few things like passenger transport and the museum service. It ceased to exist as a regional government body in 1986 when in effect all of its powers were passed back to the original local councils.. Even the Royal Mail has ceased to recognise “Tyne & Wear” as being part of anyone’s address in the area.

On the basis of this we may as well refer to the whole region as “Northumbria” being the old Anglo Saxon kingdom or better still “Bernicia” which is an even older name. They were after all in existence for a darn site longer than 12 years.

Rather than letting a bunch of Southerners define where I am from – people who will tell you with confidence that Sunderland is on the Rive Tyne and that Jarrow is in Newcastle - I am from “Sunderland in the County Durham” – just like it says on my birth certificate. Which makes me - like it or not - a “Durham boy” a fact of which I shall always be proud

Amen to that

Good stuff. So I am definitely a Durham lad. Is there anyway you can disprove the fact I was born in Jarrow?

Thats more or less what I said in one sentence;)

Anyway, looking at wiki, and the original proposals for the 1972 Local Government Act, were that Seaham & Peterlee to be part of Sunderland & therefore part of T&W. T&W would border Cleveland, removing east Durham from Co. Durham

Sunderland is now in Tyne and Wear there is no escaping that and Jarrow is ran by South Tyneside council.

However that never happened and we are County Durham ans Sunderland remained Tyne and Wear.

And Hartlepool is ran by Hartlepool Council

I know aye, Hartlepool is in Durham though so I am fine with that.
