Could the pitch be lowered?

Everton are insinuating theirs will be steeper but it wont when it opens, It will be the exact same rake on the seating as ours as that's the maximum that's legal. Oh and they will be the same distance from the pitch as we are.

The only two stadiums I can think of that are more 'compact' and 'steeper' are Heart of Midlothian and Notts County and that's because they both redeveloped their stadium before the green guide and the hillsborough disaster and the Bradford Fire. They got in early and got away with it.

You are actually incorrect regarding being closer to the pitch, the 35 degree steepness rule is correct, but distance to the pitch is a recommendation and is negotiable Spurs fans for example are far closer to the pitch than the likes of Wembley, the Emirates stadium or the SOL, the 17,500 wall at Spurs new stadium is less than 5m from the pitch as you can see below.

The whole bottom tier at the Olympia Stadion in Berlin is below ground level, roughly 35-40 rows. They compensate for the lack of concourse space, by having most of the kiosks outside the actual stadium, inside a perimeter wall, which is where the turnstiles are located. It's a class set-up.

Not really no. The emergency services ramps being the biggest reason why you couldn’t.

That and the fact the SOL need not be extended ever again. The question I’d be asking is can we remove the north stand extension?
Not to mention cost, drainage, coal mine, and the fact we can extend the east and south stands.

They'd be better off building out and up rather than down. Don't think there's the room for that. Going out would give them a chance to modernise the concourses too.

Not a chance it'll be extended in the forseeable.

oh dear you will upset the roker end warriors by taking the upper north upper extension away as the away supporters would then have to be re-located there

On the off chance we ever max out the expansion and had nowhere else to go, could we lower the pitch and add another few rows in?
if we were winning he champions league every second year..we would still only need a ground with 63500 capacity.............the demographics of the region will limit the average crowd as there is just not enough people interested in football!Loved to be proved wrong though!if we expand to 63500 they will simply up the cost of a season card and price out a lot of fans.
I've got Oosh on ignore so I think I'll be alright.

Was sat in the front row yesterday and It got me thinking that's all. Compared to other grounds we sit quite far from the pitch.

Think id rather do that than an actual expansion.

@Geronimo watch your letterbox.
The stadium is uefa / fifa standard and all new stadiums( if you want to host their games) will have the same distance from pitch side to allow for ambulance and emergency situations.

Even if we turned into Man City the 63k we would likely go to by completing the premier concourse all the way around would be more than enough. We would eventually struggle to fill that for run of the mill games. Some city games the goals are treated with a smattering of applause. It’s routine for them now and you can see the empty seats in a 54k stadium. I would say our support and that of City is pretty similar. They would be a decent yardstick

If we needed to extend, doing the south stand would be the cheapest option like.

If we did happen to get to high level of prem league and dare I say it Europe in years to come then I think the capacity we have now would be enough , possibly with a concourse over East at max because pricing of tickets would be out of reach of many.

I think the ground was designed to add to stands all the way around without any pitch lowering
Yeah it was, essentially the same as the North Stand Upper is now but all the way round. There was talk of doing the East Stand had England won their bid to host the 2006 World Cup but it never happened, probably for the best. Remember reading if we extended the East and South stand it would roughly take the capacity up to 64,000.

Spot on. My own personal opinion is that the SOL was at its best when there was no extension and the 42000 were sell outs

thats just me before anyone jumps up and down.
