Corruption or incompetence?

I think corruption is a very strong word, but I think the referee decided to be cautious and not send the player off because it was Arsenal. If that was one of our players at the Emirates, he would have been sent off imo. I'm not sure if it's corruption or simply a subconscious preconception that giving decisions against bigger teams are more controversial.

I think not playing the advantage was just incompetence though.
What you have said tells me the referee was doing Arsenal a favour. In any other words it was corruption, I don't think that is in his remit.

By committing the foul a goal scoring chance was denied. Fact. The ball went in. So how has the arsenal player remained on the pitch?

Both. Mainly corruption. Not by the FA but the refs. We invented goal-line technology so that we can stop them from over-ruling a clear positive decision with a bad one. Stop them from taking the law into their own hands. We have it and they still think they have the final say.

Indeed.

Imagine the lad had cleared off the line, we got a free kick and Gardner put it in the top corner. There'd be no issue.

The advantage rule is a difficult one.

Corruption doesn't even need to be discussed. Refereeing is a very very hard job. They do occasionally get things wrong.

Even if you say that it's just a ref making a mistake about an advantage rule, then you have to question why he hasn't sent him off. He went through one on one and scored ffs  it has to have been a clear goal scoring opportunity because he scored

The new goal line technology will have told him that it was over the line, so it's not even as if he had to make a decision about it being a clear goal scoring opportunity. He knew it was because the end result was a goal.

That's a f***ing understatement....and they always seem to get them wrong to the benefit of the same few teams, strangely enough.

What about PSC being sent off ? Friend seemed to be arguing with PDC even to the point where KF followed PDC along the technical area to continue his point, IMO, totally unprofessional. He seemed to be losing it at his point and he must have summoned Atkinson over hwo then sent PDC off or to the stands

We need Professional Mackem to investigate this conspiracy.

Knobhead.

My two pennies. It was a goal simple as. Try to put your self in the mind of the referee. He saw the foul by sagna, hence giving us the free kick. So why on earth did he not play advantage? I can not for the love of god, fathom why he didn't. No one was around jozy and he was through on goal. So why bring play back. You can say incompetence, if this advantage rule has just been brought in, but its with us for years. So whats left? Big team bias? which is a form of corruption. He doesnt have to take a bung to be corrupt.

I feel sick as a parrot atm.[DOUBLEPOST=1379183639][/DOUBLEPOST]
I can understand in a split second the referee could panic and blow his whistle without really thinking about it. Absolutely no excuse for not sending off Sagna though.

Why would he panic? No other players were around, and the advantage rule is on of the easier ones to interpret.[DOUBLEPOST=1379183735][/DOUBLEPOST]

I'm sorry like, but how the fuck is it difficult? Use today's incident as an example to your lack of knowledge.

2 absolutely shocking decisions by Refs today Atkinsons brainfarts by far the worst but also special mention for Webb for bottling sending Luiz off

The idiot was afraid that Sagna would continue to hold Jozy in the box and he would have to give another penalty, so he stopped the play just as Jozy was entering the box. Awful decisions there. You either give the advantage, either you send off Sagna, there's no debating about that. He shouldn't even be allowed to referee in the Conference after this.

That's my thought too....didn't want to give a pen. However if he was smart enough he's have realized he could give a freekick from where the infringement started.

Uefa have just tested him and declared him unfit for their competitions.....he should be sacked.

For me it doesn't matter when the whistle blew, why did he blow it in the 1st place? Has he never heard of the advantage rule?

From the ref's position it must have looked like Altidore wouldn't be able to catch the ball in time to get the same kind of opportunity we would have from a free kick.

To me it felt like the ref had already waited a moment or two from the original foul before he blew, and probably had the whistle in his mouth for half of that to see what would happen.

Should definitely have been a sending off, and on another day the ref might have been slower blowing his whistle and we'd have had a goal out of it, but I can see why he blew at the particular moment that he did.

Not playing the advantage was wrong for two reasons. Firstly, Altidore could well have brushed Sagna off and gone on to score (which he did). The other thing was that it could very easily have carried on into the penalty area. I have a feeling that he was terrified of giving another penalty and so blew up before he had to make that decision - in other words he bottled it. IMO I'm not convinced that he would have given a red card if Altidore had gone down under the challenge, but he should have shown the red card, mainly because the ball went into the net - in a way it would have softened the blow.

It needs to be a clear goalscoring opportunity. Was it? I've not seen it like.
The clue here is that he scored an actual goal, thus defining your statement that it was indeed proven to be a "goal scoring opportunity". What further proof can one demand after the flippin ball has been shot into the goal?

Also worth noting that even the Arsenal supporters in the bar I was in thought it was a joke and said he ruined the match. Never seen supporters of a top club so apologetic.

FFS, read the thread.

Altidore stayed on his feet and SHOT THE BALL PAST THE KEEPER, WHO ATTEMPTED TO SAVE IT, INTO THE GOAL.

Can people not read? It's not clear if I didn't f***ing see it.

Not necessarily, not every goal is scored from a CLEAR goalscoring opportunity.

Take the Beckham goal from his own half, if the person that passed him the ball was fouled would that be a clear goalscoring opportunity?

And to clarify, I'm not saying this wasn't a clear goalscoring opportunity. I didn't see it so I asked a question.

The rules state it has to be a CLEAR goal scoring opportunity to warrant a sending off.

It's non sequitur to assume that just because he does score that it was a clear opportunity,

That said, in this case it was a clear opportunity and he should have been sent off.
