Connor Wickham

He is a thoroughly average (and im being kind) player who wouldn't get a start for any other Premier League club.

It's true I can't think of many teams who would start with him, like.

He just doesn't present enough of a goal threat.

I wish he'd had a run of a dozen games or so. You can see there's a player there ... I can't help worry there's too much pressure on the lad to lead the line for the last 6 games

Wickham is a talented footballer, but he's built to be a target man, which he will become a very good one as his touch is really good.

I dont consider him just a target man tbh. He can do that role well but he has more to his game than that.

Not many target men are as agile and quick footed. If given game time, the right coaching and he puts in the effort there is a serious player there.

Probably the best Ive seen him play, He hardly set the world on fire at Sheffield, but has played some decent games for U21s, problem is we need goals now. Think we should have put Graham on with him for the last 15-20 minutes, and just lumped it forward.

I was highly disappointed that we let Ji go on loan. He is another prospect who wasn't given the time to flourish. His touch was also very good.

I just hope we can stop being short sighted with young'ns.

That's what I was getting at at the bottom of my post. He ticks all the boxes as a target man, but he is genuinely talented with his feet.

Anyone judging him now and claiming he's a waste of money should get themselves tested for retardness. Judging a player at 20, coming in to replace a proven goalscorer, as the only striker is just ridiculous.

Was travelling in car today so listening to 5 live.....Commentators raving over Wickham today.

Funniest bit of commentary though was them saying "I dont agree with sacking MON"

Withing 5 minutes they said

"Sunderland havent played with this passion and commitment for a long time"

and

"Why has Wickham not been playing ahead of Danny Graham who has been poor"

Oh the irony of these statements. Daft fuckers:lol:

Exactly. People are passing comment in the player they *want* to see. The facts are laid bare, I agree he has been criminally underused by MON, but he never looks remotely like scoring. It's all well and good holding it up well, I can remember Thomas Hauser being pretty good at doing that, but he looks lightweight and painfully inept whenever it comes to shooting, beating a man or putting the ball in the net.

Sorry, he just doesn't look like a natural goalscorer. He looks like someone blessed with an incredible physique which has allowed him to be pretty successful at junior level.

he'll never be a prolific goal scorer. He offered us an outlet today and held the ball up really well.

He had a good game

its a shame how people are writing graham off after about 4 appearances
if he scores a winner for us he'll be bummed ot high heaven

I'm not writing him off, it's just I feel we had players here who were better than him. I honestly & sincerely hope Danny Graham becomes a SAFC f***ing legend ...doesn't mean he will though

spot on - Green was complimentary today in general but i wanted to kick the f***ing radio when he was on about this....

Yet another Premier league game goes by without him looking anything like a threat to the oppositions goal.

A few shoulder charges on the halfway line doesn't make him a decent forward.

Yet if Sess squared his chance in the first few minutes he would have scored.

How can he provide much of a goal threat when we don't create (m)any chances for him?

Fletcher hasn't been prolific for a few months now and that was all blamed on the midfield. Wickham has a good game against tough opposition and seems to be getting criticised for not scoring chances that didn't come his way.

He's made 7 appearances for us and hasn't looked like scoring in any of them even though he had some cracking opportunities to do so. Yes you can argue it's early days but he looks like Laslandes Mk II.
