exactly, I think many on here keep forgetting how young the lad is

i agree with those on here who say that he needs games though and if he is not going to get them with us he needs to go out on loan to somewhere where he will get regular football. preferably a "lower" (I hope thats not arrogant) premier club than a championship club, a bit like we took on Wellbeck

A newly promoted side, maybe?

When Henderson went out on loan to Coventry, no-one thought we had a £20m player on our hands. He then went on to do well there, but no better or worse than Wickham done at Ipswich. The only difference being Henderson came back to us and got first team football, Wickham hasn't been getting it.

My point being, you cannot judge someone on 20 minutes football every few weeks, Welbeck looked shite at first until he got a run of games.

So until we give Wickham 5 or 6 starts and he gets used the the Premiership then i'm not going to write him off, no chance, the lad will come good!

How much more must we stress, he's just turned 19.

He has shown glimpses of quality and has a lot of potential, give it time ffs.

He's absolute dross man - We've had 2 different managers this season who've favoured playing no-one as an out and out Centre Forward in certain games as apposed to picking a fully fit Whickham. FFS, even Ji has been given more opportunities than Whickham this season.

And we never did, until someone went f***ing insane

Totally disagree, he's not dross.

My point is he is totally unproven, and was at the time, and given it is suggested we had a £20m summer budget, to spend approx 45% of it on an unproven striker was/is really bad management.

I am not righting him off, I hope Connor comes good, I hope he comes good for us, however the lack of first team starts under MON suggests he is not convinced despite seeing him every day in training.

What we need is proven Prem/Euro quality players with pace. We are nowhere near being in a situation where we can spend £8m on potential! The top 4 in our league MIGHT be able to do that, we certainly aren't!!

Straight swap for Carroll?

Kenny was after Wickham before, MON could get a lot out of Carroll.

Thoughts?

My thought is that not even Kenny Dalglish is that daft.

Apparently the new director of football at scouselands brief is to recruit young potential players rather than established pros.

Whatever his potential is, it's lower now than it was when we signed him because he's spent a year standing still.

Whatever anyone's opinion is, the constant talk of 'do we loan him out', 'can he play at Premier League level' etc etc leaves one undisputable fact:

We paid 8 MILLION pound for a player no-one is convinced will be a Premier League player, let alone a top-notch PL player.

Given our overall summer 2011 budget and what sort of players we needed, massive question marks are left against everyone involved in that transfer deal - and it wont have been purely Steve Bruce.

Well put.

The reason he's unproven is because he isn't good enough to get in our team to prove himself. Fans of all clubs slag off players that play poorly week in week out but must also realise that those players get picked because they outperform and are better than the likes of Whickham who never get a look in at their respective clubs. Everytime I've seen him this season he's looked really poor and struggled to even do the basics (control the ball). He's shit man.

This is bang-on

Forget the fee, it was over the top, but it was paid by a buffoon of a manager. Wickham is still very young. The same age as Knott, Laing and younger than Noble. None of them have been written off yet.

Forget the fee.

Should have been given at least 45 minutes today, couldn't have done much worse.

Is this one of those things where people say he is sh*t as he is on the bench. I agree he should be given more time and brought on instead of Ji.

He played 2 games when mon first took charge and got a goal and an assist I believe. Looked decent enough to me but needs more game time.

I think he will be given a good run out in pre season and some training schedule to get up to speed with other players.

Don't think Bruce had much to do with it tbh. Not a Bruce signing at all.

the problem being that is very difficult for Sunderland to 1. attract proven Prem/Euro quality players 2. when attracted to keep a hold of them for more than a season.

Three proven players weve signed and lost after a season include Cisse, Bent and Gyan. We arent willing to pay these types of player the amount of money to keep them content and we arent an attractive enough club geographically to pay them the going rate and for them to still be content.

Wickham was a punt and quite clearly an investment with the intention to sell on at a profit. So far it probably hasnt quite worked out how the club wouldve hoped but time is on Wickhams side.

I agree with this which is why we either need to play him or loan him out, his value must be dropping all the time with him not playing.
