I think you're over estimating the amount he's played up front in the Championship and the impact he had tbh. It's something he desperatly needs to attain.

Loaning him to the Premiership is f***ing pointless, because all it would guarantee is maybe some money to cover his wages. He wouldn't get regular games in any Premiership side at the moment and he'd maybe struggle in a promoted side anyway, how does that help his progress right now?

The idea behind loaning him to the Championship is a short term (something you cannot do in the Premiership) to help our asset progress through a bit of experience as a regular striker up front, something he hasn't done often enough. It would also be done to aid his confidence, with the idea he comes back here mid season in form.

Don't think it's worth it, tbh, and I don't think MON has it in his plans from his comments about bringing Davies in to show Wickham how to play CF.

This! He needs to loaned to a team who will be going for promotion like Leicester.

It's worth it unless he improves massively in the summer.

That was short term this season though, trying to make the best out of the assets at our disposal. I'd expect during the summer we'll sign at least one younger player than Davies to lead our attack and it'll push Wickham further down the pecking order.

Whatever anyone's opinion is, the constant talk of 'do we loan him out', 'can he play at Premier League level' etc etc leaves one undisputable fact:

We paid 8 MILLION pound for a player no-one is convinced will be a Premier League player, let alone a top-notch PL player.

Given our overall summer 2011 budget and what sort of players we needed, massive question marks are left against everyone involved in that transfer deal - and it wont have been purely Steve Bruce.

I think the basic principle MON had was right. He needs to play more time in the prem, but with someone in the squad who can show him what being a CF means, otherwise he'll end up like Bendtner - a big, soft bastard.

Every time I've seen him this season, he's letting people lean into him and allsorts.

Keep him at SAFC, IMO. He's not gonna learn anything from playing with Jermaine Beckford and scoring against Charlton or something.

Bruce got sucked in, man. Shows he hasn't go a clue, tbh.

Have to agree with this.....unfortunately. Ah well.......you can't win them all.

In one game this season against Villa when Whickham was up against two strong old pros in Collins and Dunne he had a great game, scoring a good goal and seeming to relish the physical battle. In that game he showed, as an 18 year old lad, the potential he has. I certainly haven't seen anything like that from 'Hell on' Noble who is at least 2 years older. He hasn't reporduced that at all but has sometimes been unfit.

People on here seem desperate to right players off, and this lad is very young. Whether and how we can get him to fulfill that potential is the tough job but the potential is definitely there.

How can you say that, when he's still a young kid who has had injuries and very little first team action?

I still think he has the potential to be a very good player for us, but he needs to be starting plenty of games. Whether he gets that opportunity with us remains to be seen, but i'm not writing him off yet

To be fair, if anyone is convinced that Wickham is going to be a good PL player from what we've seen of him, they need their head looking at.

I still think he'll be a decent premier league player, even if it takes another season or so to get regular games.

£8 million doesn't buy you a "top-notch premier league player" as quoted below when they are a young english striker. We bought potential and are still to see whether he gets to a level the club thought he would

I think he'll end up as a decent player too, but we were Pete Sutcliffed on the price.

Thats always the case for young english players though isn't it, just look at Henderson

Yeah, Henderson was an amazing deal, but a potential £12 million for Wickham is a shocking deal on our behalf, tbh.

Crazy. I mean the guy has 14 league goals ever.

Do you really think on what we've seen so far O'Neill would run the risk of starting him next season. He will only figure sporadically at best.......you really can't be taking risks in this division with kids who have'nt yet shown they are up to the job. Unless he comes back pre-season with all guns firing and forces his way into the manager's plans i can only see 15 mins here and there again............or a Championship loan.

Money needs to be moved around a bit like the Torre andre Flo and Marcus Stewart situation, unfortunately it seems to happen at this club more than any other. (except perhaps Portsmouth or Rangers)

 Aye. We're in a money laundering syndicate with Ipswich Town. It's the only explanation.

Meanwhile on Planet Earth, Wickham has shown glimpses that suggest that he's more than simply a big young kid with a half decent finish. Sometimes his first touch is horrendous, other times it shows genuine talent.

I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, personally. It's unfortunate for him that he joined the club as a prospect at a time when we're perilously light on attacking talent. If we had Gyan in the ranks alongside Bender / Campbell, then I think there'd be far less scrutiny on him.

I meant over next 2 seasons mate. Based on what we've seen so far, then no i don't think he'll get regular starts next season. A loan might be best option to get him playing and starting games, then see what he's got.

All depends on O'Neill though regardless of what we think. If he doesn't rate him then he won't even be here next season

Yes, having paid the initial 8.5 million, we want to be hoping that we end up paying the extra 3.5 million - that'll mean he's been successful and we've won things.

exactly, I think many on here keep forgetting how young the lad is

i agree with those on here who say that he needs games though and if he is not going to get them with us he needs to go out on loan to somewhere where he will get regular football. preferably a "lower" (I hope thats not arrogant) premier club than a championship club, a bit like we took on Wellbeck
