Connor Wickham

Our signing of Wickham is similar to Chelsea's signing to Lukaku, both are ones for the future who are being eased into the first team. It's not Wickham's fault that he's the first high profile, big money prospect that we've signed and it's not his fault that at times this season the money we spent on him may be have been better spent in the short term on a more experienced striker.

I still reckon he will prove a bargain.

When we bought him we didn't need one, we had Gyan and Sessegnon that looked like they were going to be leading the line for the foreseeable future.

Didn't need one? So we were happy to go into the season with one recognised and one converted striker, both of whom had been in the country less than a year?

Victor Moses did nowt when he first moved from Palace

He must be shite too. Whatever happened to him anyway?

Need to move on high maintenance deadwood. Campbell, Gordon, Elmo, Richardson before getting on his case

Yes, a recognised superstar international figurehead striker, and a converted one that had looked better as a striker than we'd previously seen from him in his "natural" position.

Add to that, we also still had Campbell, highly rated youngster who had already set about proving himself capable of the Premiership before he'd got injured, and since returning has played for England.

Anyone that we brought in could only be promised sporadic game time, or risk putting Gyan's and Sess's noses out of joint, and so to bring in a pair of highly-rated youngsters (one of which was already a seasoned international and the other the most highly rated English striker his age outside the Premiership) was a very sensible move. More than that, it showed incredible foresight.

We had the striker positions for the near future filled up, and had used the transfers of Ji and Wickham to try to secure our future too. Both were great decisions in my opinion.

Gyan leaving was something nobody could have predicted. Even a week before he left (due to speculation in the media), he and Bruce (and he and the media) had chatted about his future and as far as everyone was concerned he was going to be staying at Sunderland.

I've said it before... we won't know whether Wickham and Ji's transfers have been successes or failures for another year or so yet. I just wish everyone would give them the time they need to develop properly, because one thing's for sure - if enough of the fans decide "they're shit" and start acting the mindless mob, booing them etc, then they'll get pissed off and want to leave, and so they won't fulfill their potential here and we will have to sell them, likely at a loss.

It wouldn't be the first time our fans had driven away a good young player before he'd had a proper chance.

Jesus wept.
