Compressing HD Video

Is there any free (legal) software anyone can recommend for compressing HD video. I've used the usual free convertors but it takes an age with anything in HD.

Basically I want to be able shrink the file size as quickly as possible. To then be uploaded online.

It is probably online already

Don't try to be the Hero and release torrents is my advice.

HD is going to take time, there's a shit load of crunching to be done. Your only options are:

1) reduce the compression quality, but then you'll be uploading bigger files.

2) get a sandy bridge system, which can do it much faster

3) reject all forms of modern technology and live a simple life as a scarecrow in the country

Even option 2 will take you a few hours.

Depending on what he's got now, it could be 10x faster though (based on Core 2 Duo).

I dare say it would be even faster than that, it took me almost 13 hours on a core2due 2.33 @3.2Ghz with 4 gig of ram, i can encode the same film with a Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 930 @ 2.8 GHz with 6 gig of ram in triple channel mode in under 2 hours.

Then you should be looking at an hour or less with a decent SB shirley? The new hardware accelerated encoding really makes a difference.
