its like he reads these boards and tells us what we want to hear. Actions speaks louder than words though and these owners have proved that beyond doubt
2 years wasted, young talent sacrificed and a team full of losers, just because his mate wanted a job

Its pointless retaining academy 1 status when any player of any worth is snapped up by clubs in Championship and Premier and there seems to be nothing the club either can or wish to do about it. They even seem to be actively selling any kids worth anything. These are the kids who should be making up half the first team now. The well on that front is almost dry, so having CAT1 is now utterly pointless. This should be something we let go and go after once were a half decent club again and back in the Championship at least.
There's really nothing pointless about it. Either you get homegrown players that have received quality coaching into your first team or you, reluctantly, receive much greater compensation when a player under 17 leaves. The problem is running it badly and/or actively hawking your young players.

Look at Derby - cat 1 academy in the Championship and have managed to hold onto their young players to the extent they finished above City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs in the U23 league. If it's that hard to avoid them being picked off by the PL clubs how did they manage that?

People happily swallowing their bullshit

Their revival is built on blooding young players as much as it is on Rooney, too

Probably unpopular, but I’m actually not sure what they benefit from keeping Cat1. I’m just not sure what they gain, in their current predicament, other than status.
I completely get, once you’ve got it, why loose it. But they never offered what other Cat1 clubs do anyway, in any league..
If you believe the statement, they’re gonna stop selling youth, so no need to rely on Cat1 compensation being higher.
Dropping to Cat2 could maybe help the rebuild, means the 18/23 would drop a league, ok it’s not desirable, but neither is getting slaughtered every game.
They could benefit from going back to basics, playing a game they aren’t dreading going into, winning games, building confidence back up. No one wants to join a team that can’t earn a point, and no one wants to stay in that environment.
The money saved, could be spent on improving the academy, take them on tours to get that experience of the foreign teams or ‘bigger’ teams, free up a pot to offer to the promising lads.
There’s still some decent teams, in higher leagues, with decent academies who aren’t Cat1. Basically all those who U9-15 age groups compete with week after week..
Maybe it’s less of an attraction to any parents at U8 level to choose Sunderland as Cat2, but I doubt they look at it favourably in its current state either 🤷🏻‍♀️

The past couple of seasons have broken the academy. Squads for the u23 and u18 age groups must be thin on numbers now.

Absolutely no point in signing 21, 22 year olds to make the numbers up, playing a season of u23s football and getting released. That should be part of the pathway to the first team lads at u18 level can look at getting to. Instead they're looking at being sold off at the first opportunity or sticking around to get beat every week.

They talk about doing more to keep academy players but it's no good talking. It'll take years to be able to show young players they can make it here.

Intersting perspective, what do we not offer that other cat 1 clubs do anyway?

actions..like having th caemy status renewed recently you mean?

‘We are committed for next season’. Whilst there is a following piece in the article which a placid commitment in further seasons is given, let’s be clear, it will be disbanded after this year if this ownership remains. Gone. Stripped bare.
