Can anyone give me a genuine reason why he can't bat 5 for the Ashes?
 

Cook, Stoneman, Borthwick, Root, Collingwood, Stokes, Bairstow, Ali, Woakes, Broad, Anderson with Jennings, Wood and Plunkett in the squad.

I'd say that is a fairly strong looking ashes side :cool::cool::cool::cool:
 
He's going to Aus anyway. Just tell him to take his gear with him as we'll need him when 30-3. Its definitely not the stupidest idea!

When he retired in the first place he said he realised there were some issues with his technique that were being exposed, and to overcome this would be a solid few months in the nets, something he simply didn't have the appetite for at the age he was. It is now 5 years on. His eyes will be a little slower, something I guess could be exposed with their pace attack, and his technique would be challenged to the absolute max. I am pretty sure he is happy on the coaching side of things, getting himself set up for his future.
 
I believe the main criterium for selection in recent years has been "are you on Andrew Strauss' christmas card list?".

No idea if Collingwood qualifies.
