A true footballer can receive, control, protect and safely move the ball on. This is the same for any similar sport at top level.
The main difference is the higher the level the faster the ball comes and opponent pressure is far more intense. This is the very simple reason that players/sportsmen find the level they can do these basics at the required percentage success rate.
If you've ever tried to take the ball off a top footballer or sportsman it's almost impossible. You'd be lucky to even see the f**king thing, and that's if you're half decent yourself.

Colback looks more comfortable with these basic skills whereas Cattermole shows flaws in some as the pressure increases.
Anyway, i won't bash Cattermole, he's contributed in is own way recently and deserves to start.

A true footballer should create chances through intelligent forward play as well. Using your reasoning that means Colback isn't a footballer either. Both have attributes to make them a footballer but neither have the complete package.

Spot on post

Soz moo, if you're describing cattermole is a footballing midfielder then we best leave it here
He's our most forward thinking midfielder we have, played some crackin passes yesterday. It's not like i'm saying he's Jan Molby or owt tho.

As an aside Cattermole has played a few passes this season that Colback couldn't. His long range passing is far superior than Jacks. No contest.
It's plain as day Rocky me old mucker.

Even rocky hasn't said cattermole is a footballing midfielder (hence he mentioned larsson as being one when I asked) cos he isn't one

Playing the odd long ball forward doesn't make someone a footballing midfielder. This is used to describe players, in our team anyway, like colback and ki. Surely you can see the difference is these two in terms of what they offer compared to the likes of cattermole.

Cattermole is more than what you described him as. As I've said Cattermoles long range passing is far better than Colbacks.

Cattermole can spray a decent pass, but as you have often admitted, he lacks a footballing brain and at times he has no composure at all. This isn't a point about who is better, its about recognising what types of player someone is.

So a footballing midfielder is only someone who passes it sideways and backwards for the majority of the time? Bridcutt does that as well as anyone. He is also good in tight situations.

You said Colback is the only footballing midfielder we have, you're wrong.

Aye, and colback is more composed, has a better first touch, keeps possession better and is comfortable in tight positions. And if cattermole is apparently our most attack minded midfielder (ffs ) how comes colback finds himself in better scoring positions?

I think you're wrong. The things you mention are like a few others, additions to the basic skills. They're highly desirable but if you can't do the basics first you would never ever get a chance to do the "extras".
It's your mastery of the basics that largely defines how high up the tree you climb.
Your reasoning is slightly flawed as there's more than just attackers on the pitch but that's a separate issue.

I haven't said he is our most attack minded midfielder?

f***ing hell, cattermole plays the odd long ball and thus is our most attacking midfielder. Oh well, bardsley scored the odd goal from edge of the box so he must be one of our best attackers

Moo did.

Seems a pretty shitty and limited way to rate a midfield footballer. I think passing forwards and trying to crate stuff should be thrown into the equation n'arl mesel like.

Who has said that?

For what its worth Ki is streets ahead in that department, nee one comes close.

Moo did.
Take it up with him then.
