What a great idea by the club.

I remember a good few years back he was there before the game in amongst the crowds and the feckin roof nearly came off. My dad was next to me in the West Stand and he was nearly in tears as he was his hero when he was a kid. A bloke who i had never seen play really inspired me.

Lets really raise the roof next week for Charlie and really show our support. Forget the shite or results we have seen so far, lets show the world how good our support is and that we really care about our club.

We are SAFC, Haway the Lads.

The distance between club and fans is wider than I thought, why on gods earth would they think we'd use clapper things?

but its charlies 80th birthday- its a special occasion --been in the planning for at least a week now- maybe they consulted him and asked what he wanted

The straw was to protect the pitch from snow and frost. We got free entry for clearing the pitch before a game. Memories.
Always amazes me how there wasn't more fires. There must have been a few tab butts flicked into it.

Just asking the question here to older supporters. I'm not judging Hurley in any way because I wasn't born when he played.

Was he really as good as his legend suggests? When you look at his time here he played most of it at what is now bottom 6 Prem/top half championship level.

I'm just asking because if he really was that good, why didn't Man Utd or whoever the best teams in the country were come in for him at some point? Was he really our player of the century or was he our most popular player of the century?
The man was a giant in stature and is a gentleman by nature.
When he came up for a corner the whole ground would just erupt with the chant, Charlie Charlie, music to my ears.
Regarding his ability as a centre half he was compared to the legendary John Charles of (who played CF and CH) for Leeds and Juventus. That is a massive accolade.

Brilliant by the club.
We shall all cheer the great man to the rafters.

Lets hope the players give a performance that the great man can be proud off.

Some people will moan about anything. The club are buying tribute to a true legend but all people can talk about is bloody clappers.

Maybe the club hope the clappers will drown out the moaning and the booing from the stands because we lost the coin toss!
Booing disgusts me.

I doubt he'd request clackers, but take the general point about putting them in perspective of the occasion.

Remember the first game in the cup at Old Trafford in 64 was it? The Stretford End were singing before the game then suddenly from our end came 'Charlie, Charlie, Charlie' and we drowned the Mancs out. Hairs on the back of the neck time!

As an aside we should have won that game. Funnily enough it was Hurley's back header to the concussed Monty which gave Man Utd their undeserved third goal

Having just read the club page about this, it's good to see the gates from the old training ground have been re-sited at the SOL and will be rededicated before the game too.

Remember when Leicester got dog's abuse on here on a weekly basis for providing their fans with clackers to help to artificially produce a semblance of an atmosphere?

Nah, me neither.

Are you on your blob mate? You are usually one of the better mags on here. That is 2 needless digs now on what is to be fair a thread about a Sunderland legend on a Sunderland AFC message board.
