Closest you have been to death?

I had to be talked into going into hospital when my leg swelled up as I wanted to go home and sleep it off. Turned out was a massive DVT and probably would have gone into my lungs causing a pulmonary embolism and done me in if I hadn't listened to someone I worked with.

Just after our fat lass wasborn so round about 78 ish we had gone with me mam to the Isle of man on a school holiday. Can't remember where she was teaching at the time but may have been Moorside comp in Consett. Anyway we had all gone swimming, little clever shit me couldn't swim but wouldn't wait for me dad so jumped in any. Ended up in Douglas hospital overnight

Recent Aortic Valve replacement and a repair to an ascending thoracic Aneurysm my heart was stopped and on a bypass for 4 hours I suppose its as near to death as Im likely to get without being dead. Overjoyed i just missed the recent fuck up with the National power grid too.
My youngest had heart surgery on the day he was born and then a 10 hour surgery at a few weeks old. He was put on a heart and lung bypass machine while his heart was stopped and his body temperature was taken down to 12°c. Afterwards he was kept in a coma for 2 weeks with his ribcage wide open covered with clingfilm so the surgeon could do minor adjustments and repairs.

My wife had only held him for 20 seconds after his birth then couldn't touch him for two weeks. While we were staring at his lifeless body through the incubator a few days after surgery one of the nurses came up and said "why the sad face?" We pointed to our son and she smiled and said he wasn't even poorly compared to some of the kids and would be home in a few weeks.

We owe a massive debt to the NHS and the Freeman Hospital in particular.

This very moment in time.
I was having trouble swallowing so last Tuesday I had camera down to see what the problem was. Sadly they found a cancerous tumour just about blocking my oesophagus and a small satellite tumour. I had a CT scan Thursday morning and I'm going to receive a phone call on Tuesday after a meeting with cancer specialists. I suppose I'll learn my fate with this phone call but I have my endoscopy report and have to admit it's pretty f*****g grim.
Enjoy life while you can folks, wine, women and song. Most importantly don't waste time on hate.
Good luck!

As a passenger in a transit van, many years ago. We went down this long industrial road and were doing about 60 mph. As we approached this junction this artic came right out and took up the entire road to turn. We swerved off the road onto derelict land and we would've been fine if it wasn't for a great big concrete lamp post.
We hit it head on and knocked it over the top of the van. It crushed the cab in the middle and down my side and laid over the back in a delve it had made. It was still attached to the rebar.
Where was I?
I was 20 feet away from the van. I'd went out through the windscreen which had shattered as I went out. The driver was trapped with his legs under the steering wheel. He was quickly released and ended up with cuts and bruises and a broken arm.
I ended up with a dislocated knee and a cut up face, hands and bruises and such...but nothing lasting.

I was told by a witness that, If I'd never got catapulted through that windscreen as I did, I'd have been crushed by the lamp post.

I wish you all the hope and luck in the world, Dave. Positive thoughts all around.
