Climbing Helvellyn

Adzy

Midfield
Weather permitting me and some friends are going up to the Lakes to climb Helvellyn at the weekend. The route we are planning is from Glenridding that goes up past Red Tarn and Striding Edge then round and back down Swirral Edge. Just wondering if anyone here had any tips or anything that I should know. Like are the routes clearly signposted and are the trails easy to follow or do they require a bit of maneuvering? Cheers

Its an easy climb with a bit of light scrambling to the summit.

Descending Swirral edge in slippy conditions with poor visibility can be a bit hairy.

Climbed it a few weeks ago, got some class photos. Quite a nice walk, its tougher coming down than it is going up purely for the impact on your knees. Enjoyed it, freezing at the top mind despite being boiling all the way up.

Also did it a few weeks ago, up Striding Edge which was class tbh. Couldn't see a thing from the top mind and missed Swirral edge so ended up walking for another 2 hours down another path to Glenridding. Would recommend it, took about 4 hours altogether.

Just got back, cracking day out, weather was scorching like.

I fancy this for the weekend. How long did it take? Can you park easily enough at the bottom and take the same route to back to the car? Do I need ant specialist equipment or will walking boots be sufficient?

It was roasting and I was with a couple people who aren't quite as fit as me and we were up and down in under 5 hours including water and food breaks. We got there for 9am and a lot of the parking spaces were taken then. There's an info centre in the car park you can enquire about routes but we went up from Glenridding over striding Edge and around and ended up back where we started. If the weather's fine a pair of sturdy trainers should be good enough, it's all I took, though there was plenty of people in proper boots with walking sticks etc.
