Clean Air Zones

Noticed the signs are up on the way into Newcastle. Can't help but think it's a total money making scheme, which surely will dry up once everyone moves over to leccy cars in 10 yrs time or so. It'll be interesting to see whether they'll suddenly come up with some wank excuse to then charge all cars going into city centres. 🫤

Of course they will. Normalise tolls and charges and there’s another new revenue stream we won’t think twice about paying.

Aye, its a total piss take. Like working folk aren't feeling the pinch already.

Ridiculous from the council.

What’s the crack with these? My cars a 10 year old petrol, assumed it would be liable in these zones.

Like other "sin taxes" (like alcohol and tobacco duties, sugar levy, etc.), Clean Air Zones are designed to discourage certain behaviours. In this case, they hope to discourage you from driving a highly polluting vehicle.

I've just checked and my 13-year-old petrol car isn't liable for the charge. I'm not sure what the threshold is, but my guess is that you are only liable to pay if your car is particularly polluting.

It’s nothing at all to do with clean air. Just a chance for the council to make some money back because central government have cut funding to the bone.

The ULEZ in London is going to extend to the M25 from next year. Much needed and great to see.

The air in our cities is absolutely filthy and taking years off people's lives. It needs dealing with as soon as possible.

Road user charging is inevitable too. So yes, the CAZ is the first step before that.
