Cirkin - Hamstring Injury

Would have to be Amad or Dajaku. Maybe Thompson from the u23s. Which is by no means great, but what do you do with a third striker if if there are no injuries? Personal opinion is that we should have been playing 4-3-3 all season. If Stewart doesn’t get injured you’re looking at a striker in the stands each week - which doesn’t help us either. Personally I wouldn’t have minded one old stager coming in on a free just in case. But I can also see why they’d take a gamble too. We’ve only got so much wage budget to spread around and maybe saving on extra cover allows us to get Michut and Ba and they become the ones who make a difference for us (like shifting no hopers like flano and Hume potentially saved us the money to get Roberts). Or maybe we get caught a bit and look a bit daft in the short term. Building a squad is a gamble. Doesn’t take many injuries to leave even big squads exposed. Equally fans never moan about too many player sat in the stands - and over time that is more damaging to the club than too few in a specific position for a couple of weeks.
A third striker you could rotate, or play 2 of your best 3. Amad is very much a work in progress who struggled in the Scottish Prem against shitter teams than the championship.Dajaku was shite in league 1 , he looks awful. The club have made a massive error not getting in a striker and also back up for Patterson. We have hardly started the season and we are already playing players out of position, exactly like what happened last season. Fortunately last season we got away with it, this season we are in with teams that will punish you, like tonight for example.

We’ve got Bass. He looked alright to me. Just need to keep the ball away from his feet. The striker thing is a bit of a surprise I guess, but we’re basically talking about a body. We’re not getting much of a striker unless he can play in other positions. Maybe we needed a Brian Deane. Maybe we get one now tbf. But as of right now we’re not talking about many positions with players out of natural roles. Not really any if we stick with a back three (though I hope we don’t).

We weren’t punished tonight because of players out of position as we didn’t really have any. We were punished because of a late change to a game plan and coming up against a more streetwise, physical opponent. Boro’s results haven’t been great but their performances this season have been comfortably top half. I still expect them to be in the playoff picture when all is said and done. A narrow defeat at their place is not an unexpected result.

Right. And?

It’s a forum. You’re entitled to disagree.

Personally I think accumulating a squad with so many young players - many foreign who don’t speak English as a first language and will be living abroad for the first time - is a considerably more risky strategy than building a balanced squad, with more players who are experienced and proven in this league.

If you disagree, craic on.
100% this. Our strategy in the market has been very high risk. A few more injuries to key players and it's going to be a very long winter.

Bass is absolutely shite, don't take my word for it ask any Portsmouth supporter. O'nien is already playing out of position on one of the back three, now posters on here want to move him across to cover for Cirkin and play Wright. So that now leaves us with one CB on the bench who both managers have little confidence in or he would be playing instead of O'nien.

Definitely a mag.

Why’s that? Because I can see the obvious problem with accumulating teenagers from another country, who don’t speak English as a first language and will probably be living abroad for the first time, as opposed to more experienced players with a track record in this league? Especially when most of these young recruits are just stockpiled in positions we were already fine in?

You're f***ing blind or have an incredibly short memory if you don't think this is the most exciting squad for many a year. When do you think it was better - in League 1? Or getting relegated from the Championship or Prem? You have to go back to Big Sams team that was even decent FFS.
You’re wasting your time mate, I’d be very surprised if he’s even a Sunderland fan, just seems to enjoy having little digs.

Which position were we already fine in then?

Midfield for a start. The decision having been taken to keep Matete here with Evans, Neil and O’Nein, and already having Embleton, Roberts and Pritchard as “number 10s”, did we really need to sign two more midfielders? Was that the real priority?

Did we need another two young wingers, in a squad that already has so many (but doesn’t actually play with wingers)?

The Pompey fan who gets on here said he was fine. Looked okay against SWFC (excepting that pass). Onien is absolutely not out of position playing in defence. He should never play anywhere other than in defence for safc again. He’s dreadful when played in midfield.

I’m not saying that we’ve got tonnes of cover throughout. There are clearly some areas where we’re weaker than others. Guess I’m just saying that it’s far from a disaster as things stand. The big one is up top. All other positions are far less critical imo.

I think it’s pretty much accepted that O’Nien won’t be used as a midfielder, and Matete isn’t good enough. We’ve been playing with 3 across midfield, so arguably need 6 who can challenge, which we’ve now got.

We shelled out decent money for Matete 8 months ago, so it doesn’t bode well if he’s not good enough. Also begs the question why he’s still here, if they don’t intend to use him.

Having said that though, I’d have preferred one of the new centre mids to be experienced.

We’ve made a lot of signings since Speakman came in, and most have been successes. We’re gonna get the odd one wrong, it happens.
And personally, I would have sent him out on loan.

Onien isn't being played out of position. His versatility is his biggest strength
