Cirkin - Hamstring Injury

We need him to be on it at kick off, not 65-70 minutes in to the game mate
No I know. Just think he’s suffered from not getting opportunities so far this season. He looks rusty.

You can see how we end up getting stuck on the back 3 while we were finding our way in the league. In some ways this setback might help us in the medium term though. As long as results kept happening we would have stuck with the wingbacks. Really, to help us build the squad over the next few years - and to help us provide a platform to develop players - we had to change to some sort of 4-3-3. With the injuries we’ve picked up we’ll be a tiny bit makeshift at left back for the short term, but on the flip side it’ll give more space for creative players like Roberts to get up to speed (bit to mention the young players). Most importantly it’ll put the likes of Clarke in their proper position. His final ball won’t be as poor as it was tonight very often.

I think saying us being tiny bit makeshift is an understatement mate, we are lacking a squad in depth , especially in vital positions. Christ knows what would happen if let's say Patterson or Simms gets injured, or Baath or O'nien

Disagree marra. The only place we won’t be able to field a player in their natural position in our starting XI is at left back. And even then that’s because of two specific injuries. We can keep adding in redundancy after redundancy but our first team squad is already 25 players. It’s not small. Id always prefer a smaller squad as it leaves players more involved, but then you also need to accept one or two doing a job for us if short term injuries go against us. It’s just something you have to absorb.

We've lost our best player tonight and struggled, we have no plan B. What do we do if Simms gets injured, or Patterson, or O'nien, or Gooch. We have had 2 injuries tonight and the squad is already looking threadbare

It’s really not looking all that threadbare imo. I’d also disagree that we don’t have a plan b. Perhaps putting one into practice 10 mins before kickoff is a bit beyond a newly appointed coach, but there are plenty of things we can do for milwall and beyond. Of course losing our best player hurts, but there isn’t a team in the league who wouldn’t miss Ross Stewart. And yeah it does leave us a bit exposed up top in the short term, but the other positions mentioned have perfectly adequate cover. Our squad is big in terms of numbers. Yes we have one or two balance issues but it’s not the end of the world. We can still achieve what we need to this season even if we have a few setbacks like tonight.

Who would you play up front if Simms gets injured now?

Two words for you mate . The first starts with F and the second is Off.

Right. And?

It’s a forum. You’re entitled to disagree.

Personally I think accumulating a squad with so many young players - many foreign who don’t speak English as a first language and will be living abroad for the first time - is a considerably more risky strategy than building a balanced squad, with more players who are experienced and proven in this league.

If you disagree, craic on.

Would have to be Amad or Dajaku. Maybe Thompson from the u23s. Which is by no means great, but what do you do with a third striker if if there are no injuries? Personal opinion is that we should have been playing 4-3-3 all season. If Stewart doesn’t get injured you’re looking at a striker in the stands each week - which doesn’t help us either. Personally I wouldn’t have minded one old stager coming in on a free just in case. But I can also see why they’d take a gamble too. We’ve only got so much wage budget to spread around and maybe saving on extra cover allows us to get Michut and Ba and they become the ones who make a difference for us (like shifting no hopers like flano and Hume potentially saved us the money to get Roberts). Or maybe we get caught a bit and look a bit daft in the short term. Building a squad is a gamble. Doesn’t take many injuries to leave even big squads exposed. Equally fans never moan about too many player sat in the stands - and over time that is more damaging to the club than too few in a specific position for a couple of weeks.
