Christmas telly - was it really better in the old days?

We had little in the way of options to create the feeling that Christmas was coming so it was quite a nice build up
TV ads, TV telling you what was coming "Christmas on Bbc1" etc
TV times and radio times come out
Your favourite shows has Christmas specials
Hard to compare to now but TV controlled our experience ,now we take what we want from it .You can pretty much watch TV all day and not hear the word mentioned now

True.

I Sky plussed that one the other day so it's ready. I have National Lampoons, Home Alone (watched last night putting the tree up), Home Alone 2, Love Actually and Jingle All The Way on DVD ready to go. Just need to watch out for The Santa Clause and Elf on the planner and that's it sorted.

 Used to love doing this like. My taped version of Home Alone had some brief highlights of England vs Germany in Euro 96 before it started.

And my Spaghetti Western DVDs have never been the same without the classic sponsored by Stella Artois vignettes at the ad breaks.
Visited my mate in Blackpool and he had his porn stuck on the end of the Milk cup final V Norwich

What is the difference between a movie and a proper film ?

A TV Movie was made just for television with no cinema release. They tended to be lower budget and the cast largely of unknowns and has-beens. I guess the nearest equivalent in recent times would be the classic 'straight to video' films.

Found this website while bored at work.

UK Christmas TV

I always looked back on the 70's as a golden age of family Christmases and everyone gathered round the telly. By god the truth is very different. Black and White minstrels every year, tv movies being shown instead of proper films. Other than classic Morecambe and Wise it was a sea of grim.
Nothing different on telly today despite having million channels.

The telly would hardly ever be on on Xmas day. Always loads of family round and usually played cards most of the evening, including the kids. Miss those days now the family are dead / scattered / not bothered.

That is a fantastic selection. Tim Allan Santa Clause is brilliant and Jingle All The Way is Arnies best work since Kinder Garden Cop.
