I asked this last week and looked into it. Sunderland dock workers have as much claim as Southampton etc to actually founding the club, but it looks like the strip came from Southampton. but Southampton copied of us anyway

the idea of the strip came from sunderland mate , however we didnt start them as was qouted earlier , i have a mate from over there and he is adamant that the club has no links with our club

The Basques are related to anybody else in Europe. In fact, as the Basque language is not Indo-European you can even claim that they're not Caucasian.

So personally I find it rather a relief to hear that them up the road aren't related to any of us.

Ermm - I'm sure Ancient Brits & Basques are of the same stock.

I'm not sure what is correct with this one - there seems to be a few different theories for the strips anarl One is that it came from mattress linen that was left over:lol:

Sam here too, annoys the fuck out of the 1992 boys when I point this out to them. Always mention Gateshead County Durham anarl and sing the song to them.

Shepherds of Gateshead the biggest and the best store,
Shepherds of Gateshead have what you are looking for,
There’s so much to see,
And the car park is free,
Coming shopping at Shepherds with the whole family!

don't forget that their nations anthem is about them leaving Northumberland and heading for a town South of the Tyne... in County Durham

Shipbuilders - I was talking to a Basque and he said nobody was sure but Athletic were formed by British Miners?????????????

From Wikishite

Later a young student from Bilbao named Juan Elorduy, who was spending Christmas 1909 in London was charged by the club to buy 25 new shirts, but was unable to find enough. Waiting for the ship back to Bilbao and empty handed, Elorduy realised that the colours of the local team Sunderland Athletic F.C. matched the colours of the City of Bilbao, and bought 50 shirts to take with him. Upon arriving in Bilbao, the clubs directors decided almost immediately to change the teams strip to the new colours, and since 1910 Athletic Club have played in red and white stripes. Of the 50 shirts bought by Elorduy half were then sent to Atlético Madrid which had originally begun as a youth branch of Athletic. Before the switch from blue & white to red & white, only one other team wore red & white, Sporting de Gijón, since 1905.[3][4]

By the way, that paragraph used to say 'local team Southampton' which makes rather more sense as who would travel up to the Wear from London to catch a boat back to Spain? Whereas Southampton ...

we have a trophy of sorts presented by bilbao as recognition of the link, and the name athletic comes from England obviously even if not us.

Sounds about right. I bet any left over would have been snapped up by Senor Ashley and flogged off in SportsDirectico.

seems sunderland fans are hating of the geordie identity, and believe me we love it ;)

1st team to knock the skunks out of europe when they were formed weren't they ?

I wonder if the Birtley Branch of the Athletic Bilbao supporters club still meeets
