Central Heating knocking

My central heating makes a tapping or knocking sound when it heats up or cools down

Recently is has got much worse, no idea why

Do I bleed the radiators or is it something more serious?

Either a loose clamp or air in the system.
I'd go with bleeding the radiators as your first step and see if that helps.
Of course when it's cold and the heating comes on/goes off you'll get some natural expansion noises which will be worse in extremes.

Actually, to clarify... Don't "bleed" them!
Just drain the air out from the top valves, stop when water starts to come out.
You'll probably need a radiator key if you haven't got one.
