Castro stands down

Hopefully its the start of something for the young people of Cuba, who have been ruled by 80-odd year olds for a long time.
There are a lot of good things about Cuba as it is, but a lot more needs fixing there, physically, politically and economically.

Miguel Díaz-Canel is rumoured to be his successor he is 57 and already a political figure in Cuba. He took over as president in 2018 he may help liberate the economy which is in crisis.

I was there in the late 90s. Fidel was on the telly giving one of his epic speeches when, all of a sudden, his teeth fell out. He managed to catch them with the tip of his tongue, and continued talking as he probed them back into place. I thought it was hilarious, but nobody else was laughing.

The best things about Cuba, ironically, are due to its isolation: the crumbling architecture, the 50s American cars, the music. There's huge potential, but I hope economic progress isn't at the expense of Cuba's identity. If the Miami Cubans come back en masse, it'll rapidly become just another American outpost.

I can't see how it can be anything else, it's not as if its economic progress is something that can be self-determined.

Cuba Sanctions - United States Department of State

Hopefully the US will ease some of the sanctions made by Trump but Biden is showing little interest so far. I can't really see Cuba's socialist policy changing too much in the short term. A hallmark moment though. 1959...jeez.

The reality is that they will have to open up and reform. Biden then reduces or eliminates sanctions and the place is flooded with Americans, leading to rapid influx of MacDonalds type americanisation..:(
