Thats alright then. I’m about to take a similar amount as a pay cut because of it. Add in paying back child benefit, pension contribution, student loan and I see less than 2k of that 10k in take home pay. Just pointless.
I'd probably take it then. Especially if 3 days per week with no travel cost. The 2 days a week may end up being 1 some weeks, you won't know until you start.Puts me a few hundred quid below it.
It's doable by train, but I think it would end up a 3 hour trip all in.I'd probably take it then. Especially if 3 days per week with no travel cost. The 2 days a week may end up being 1 some weeks, you won't know until you start.
Is it doable by train?
10k sounds a lot but 400 miles a week is probably about a tank of petrol so around 2.5 - 3k a year? About 2.5k in tax and NI on the pay rise? 3.5k on car? Tax and insurance say 500? Not a lot left on the first year and that assumes the car doesn’t cost any extra.Aye if you add up the travelling hours over ac year x hourly rate, plus cost of car and running, the 10k is prob nearly gone.
If it leads to better things long term fair enough I guess.
I've recently got the option of a promotion at work, it would be a 10k increase, but require me in Leeds 2 days a week.
I don't mind the drive at all, so that's not a problem.
The issue is they will not pay petrol expenses or car allowance etc, at present we only have one car, which my wife needs.
I'd need a second car, but don't want any additional income to be taken up with fuel and car payments, it then seems pointless.
Do you think a cheap older car, would be good for 20k motorway miles a year?
7k after tax
Need to buy, tax, insure and service
Then fuel and inevitable maintenance
Plus about 6 hours of your time in the car per week.
Not entirely sure this is a good deal
It makes sense to me. Why would you work to effectively have over 80% taken away, most of which has little benefit to me. The extra demands of the role that pays 10k more isn’t worth the difference in take home pay (below 2k a year). If the deductions, mainly tax and higher rate child benefit charge weren’t as high I wouldn’t be moving to the lower paid job.Even if your company don't pay you anything for mileage you may still be able to claim tax relief on your travel costs because Leeds is not your normal office. Check the wording of your contract for certainty.
So you're taking a 10k pay cut to lose 2k take home pay rather than pay 8k in deductions? That makes sense![]()
It sounds like a bit of negotiation may be required.I've recently got the option of a promotion at work, it would be a 10k increase, but require me in Leeds 2 days a week.

That attitude would set alarm bells ringing for me.I applied for the role, they only stated it was head office based mid selection process.
Their argument is I applied for a job in Leeds, so it's on me too be able to get there
I'm no expert but couldn't the op claim some of his expenses against tax. As for the car I'd go for a VW Passat.Aye if you add up the travelling hours over ac year x hourly rate, plus cost of car and running, the 10k is prob nearly gone.

I done the drive twice this week for the selection process and it was a piece of piss drive to be honest, 90 minutes, free flowing, one road all the way down.
I've spent longer sitting in traffic getting into Newcastle. Lol
Train it….I've recently got the option of a promotion at work, it would be a 10k increase, but require me in Leeds 2 days a week.
