Car help!!!

Even if your company don't pay you anything for mileage you may still be able to claim tax relief on your travel costs because Leeds is not your normal office. Check the wording of your contract for certainty.

Thats alright then. I’m about to take a similar amount as a pay cut because of it. Add in paying back child benefit, pension contribution, student loan and I see less than 2k of that 10k in take home pay. Just pointless.

So you're taking a 10k pay cut to lose 2k take home pay rather than pay 8k in deductions? That makes sense :rolleyes:

My thinking was 10k additional is about £600 take home pay a month.

With a good mpg I can do fuel on about £160 a month

Say £100 a month car payment another £70 a month on servicing, mots, tax etc.

Would still give me an extra £280 a month take home and a second car, which would come in handy anyway.
I'd probably take it then. Especially if 3 days per week with no travel cost. The 2 days a week may end up being 1 some weeks, you won't know until you start.

Is it doable by train?
It's doable by train, but I think it would end up a 3 hour trip all in.

Aye if you add up the travelling hours over ac year x hourly rate, plus cost of car and running, the 10k is prob nearly gone.
If it leads to better things long term fair enough I guess.
10k sounds a lot but 400 miles a week is probably about a tank of petrol so around 2.5 - 3k a year? About 2.5k in tax and NI on the pay rise? 3.5k on car? Tax and insurance say 500? Not a lot left on the first year and that assumes the car doesn’t cost any extra.

I've recently got the option of a promotion at work, it would be a 10k increase, but require me in Leeds 2 days a week.

I don't mind the drive at all, so that's not a problem.

The issue is they will not pay petrol expenses or car allowance etc, at present we only have one car, which my wife needs.

I'd need a second car, but don't want any additional income to be taken up with fuel and car payments, it then seems pointless.

Do you think a cheap older car, would be good for 20k motorway miles a year?

just make your wife walk or use the bus

7k after tax
Need to buy, tax, insure and service
Then fuel and inevitable maintenance
Plus about 6 hours of your time in the car per week.

Not entirely sure this is a good deal

100% sure I wouldn’t be taking it for a £10k increase.

On face value, it doesn't sound like a good deal when you're taking on a role with more responsibility and after expenses only getting what you'd earn in another place in OT pay working those extra travelling hours.

You're being shortchanged, imo.

What if the fuel price jumps up to £2 or something?

It makes sense to me. Why would you work to effectively have over 80% taken away, most of which has little benefit to me. The extra demands of the role that pays 10k more isn’t worth the difference in take home pay (below 2k a year). If the deductions, mainly tax and higher rate child benefit charge weren’t as high I wouldn’t be moving to the lower paid job.

It sounds like a bit of negotiation may be required.

If they've decided you're the right person for the job they'll cough up something for the motor and/or expenses.

Make sure you prepare a sound case and discuss it with the budget holder

I applied for the role, they only stated it was head office based mid selection process.

Their argument is I applied for a job in Leeds, so it's on me too be able to get there
That attitude would set alarm bells ringing for me.
You won't see much of the extra £10k after tax and expenses and you'll see less of your family, so it depends how much you want a new job title.

I'm no expert but couldn't the op claim some of his expenses against tax. As for the car I'd go for a VW Passat.

The AA indicate that an average car costs 47p per mile for 8k mile per year. For 20k miles per year, the cost per miled will be a bit less but more miles. An increase in salary of £10k after tax will put you out of pocket.

I done the drive twice this week for the selection process and it was a piece of piss drive to be honest, 90 minutes, free flowing, one road all the way down.

I've spent longer sitting in traffic getting into Newcastle. Lol

I’ve done Leeds many times and yeah I agree it’s easy enough, but the cost of the car, it’s maintenance the fuel and your time, minus the tax you pay on your income, then I assume you’ve taken on more responsibility it appears to be a bad deal.
Your car then needs to be very reliable as you can’t afford to be without it, so can’t be a high miler cheap diesel, as your adding approx 20k miles a year (300 hours).
But hey you know better than anyone what your walking into mate.
If your happy go for it.

Train it….

Save what you can on car. Parking in leeds centre is ridiculously priced and timed. Where abouts in leeds would it be?

96 miles from my home in jarra to leeds, so fuel factors in, plus roadworks and general arseholes especially on the A19

Train probs be cheaper if you do b2b days

If you’re in Leeds 2 days a week at say 180 miles per day then that’s a lot less than 20k miles Pa, assuming 4-5 weeks annual holiday. Costs for fuel etc might not be as bad as calculated. Will still take a big chunk out of your £10k rise though.

What is your current situation? Most people seem to be advising you on the basis that your current cost is £0.

Are there any savings to be made on your current travel cost? Even the heating in the house a few days a week etc.

Ultimately it depends on the opportunity, your career and how much you want it. If you start and do a really good job they'd be mad not to let you do every other week / 3 weeks in 4 or some kind of compromise.
