Car help!!!

I've recently got the option of a promotion at work, it would be a 10k increase, but require me in Leeds 2 days a week.

I don't mind the drive at all, so that's not a problem.

The issue is they will not pay petrol expenses or car allowance etc, at present we only have one car, which my wife needs.

I'd need a second car, but don't want any additional income to be taken up with fuel and car payments, it then seems pointless.

Do you think a cheap older car, would be good for 20k motorway miles a year?

Plenty of options for decent older cars. If reliable is the main determining factor you’d probably get a small Kia still under warranty for significantly less than 5k.
Plenty of picanto’s for example around 3.5k and still a couple of years warranty.
Alternatively a much older diesel Volvo estate or perhaps a VW Passat seem to go for ever.
The new job really should at least include a temporary package to cover increases in travel costs though, even if only as a transition arrangement.

Does the pay rise tip you into the higher tax bracket. If so it could be pretty pointless taking it if you need to run another car
Puts me a few hundred quid below it.
They want you to work 100 miles away but won't pay expenses ?

Book advance trains at £10 e/w then tell them tough shit when there are strikes or multiple cancellations as Transpennine tend to do
I applied for the role, they only stated it was head office based mid selection process.

Their argument is I applied for a job in Leeds, so it's on me too be able to get there. Kind of makes sense

Do Kias have 7 years warranty? If so that's a great shout.

Thats alright then. I’m about to take a similar amount as a pay cut because of it. Add in paying back child benefit, pension contribution, student loan and I see less than 2k of that 10k in take home pay. Just pointless.

I’d go for a higher mileage 320d or similar. Something cheap enough but comfortable to drive.

I think that for £10k a year then I’d stay in your current job, but then I’m not very ambitious.

If you do buy a car then factor in all of the costs and not just the purchase price.

Plus if you start going to head office on 2 days a week they might want you there more often.

Depends what youre calling cheap but a well maintained old toyota, honda or mazda should do it ..for so long anyway , need two services a year . Mondeo as well
You will be using up most of the net of that £10k on travel mind , also doing an extra 6-8 hours unpaid commute. Wouldnt do me

We're in a transitioning period bringing overseas work back into the UK. I'm hoping when that settles down, I can reduce it to 1 day a week and with the rest from home.

Each to their own, but it doesn’t sound like a good deal unless it leads to another move later on.
That journey will become a nightmare which your having to fund in hard cash and your time.

Good luck though if you go for it
I done the drive twice this week for the selection process and it was a piece of piss drive to be honest, 90 minutes, free flowing, one road all the way down.

I've spent longer sitting in traffic getting into Newcastle. Lol

Aye if you add up the travelling hours over ac year x hourly rate, plus cost of car and running, the 10k is prob nearly gone.
If it leads to better things long term fair enough I guess.
