Need some advice, want to up the ante a bit on the old camera front but I don't know too much about these digital SLR's. Fancy a Canon 450 but I have read reviews that the 1000D is basically the same camera but with less features therefore easier to use and cheaper.

I am no photographer like, taking pictures of kids etc, nothing serious although I said want to get into a little more. What would you lot suggest? Budget is around the 400 mark.

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Id go for the 450, once you start using you would want extra features. Ive got the 500d (had a 400d). If youre in no hurry check out the classifieds at talkphotography.co.uk. You need to register but there are some good deals there for used stuff - some very good advice too. They have a good community and its a better place to buy than fleabay. Ive bought a couple of lenses and my camera body from there.

Make sure you keep some budget for lens . . . . . to be honest the lens will make the difference in pics from either of those cameras. So if you can buy the cheaper camera with a better lens, then go for that.

As entry level I would recommend the 15-85mm or 18-200mm as a slightly cheaper / better zoom option. Having said that, if budget doesnt extent that far, get the kit lens and then the 50mm 1.8 prime lens which will be good for taking kids shots as you said would be
