George Best had amazing talent far surpassing Gascoigne's, back in them days there was a drinking culture which was magnified x10 for Best as he was one of football's first superstars.

George Best's situation was never seen or at least publicised before, he drank himself to death. Gazza is still fairly young now but just will not help himself after seeing the precedent of George Best.

There is loads of help available to Gazza, he is a waster as much as I used to like the bloke.

Canny article written by a lad who wants to bum him by the sounds of it. Even with all that love inthe room you can help think he is thinking what a f***ing waste of time it's all been.

List ANY anchievement of Gascoigne at a World Cup. Apart from making 'Nessun Dorma' a top 10 hit.

This is part of my problem with the 'Gazza is a legend' theory.

I'd see a man like Kevin Ball as a legend because he made the most of his very limited talent, Gascoigne made the least of his enormous talent.

I'm sure Ball's kids are more proud than Gascoigne's are.

I remember Beardsley and Lineker dual-handedly reviving England's World Cup bid. I remember Michael Owen slaloming his way through the Argentine defence before lashing an unstoppable shot past the keeper. I remember Archie Gemmill doing much the same thing to World Cup favourites Holland. Paul Gascoigne? Crying like a bairn because he got booked for being a hot-headed liability.

And that makes how he played in that world cup lesser in some way?

I also remember him playing like no other England player I've seen too, in that tournament he was by far the best England player I've seen in my 36 years - in fact it's not even close with any of the others. If we applied the same logic to Diego Maradona four years earlier and then four years later we'd remember him as a cheating coke head - those are our main memories of him, not probably the best player we've ever seen.

I suppose Maradona wasn't a genius too?

Give over, the precedent of George Best

As much as I like Kevin Ball, the idea he's a legend and that someone so limited, who for much of his time didn't even have a positive effect on my team annoys me, because it's based on theories after the event and romanticising something which wasn't really the case. Gascoigne for a while at least done it.

Being England's best player, and one of the tournament's best players (6th, according to 442).

For a team that hasn't won a trophy in my lifetime, what else can a player do?

Nonsense.

It's based on watching Ball, week in week out, while following Sunderland. Most of the 'Gazza is a legend' theories, on here, are from people who saw a small fraction of his games.

You could equally be accused of 'romanticising something which wasn't really the case' couldn't you?

Give over, Ball was getting grief in some of his time here. An average at best centre half, then used in midfield to no effect under Buxton. Then he kind of made a niche for himself under Reid - but still wasn't as effective as Alex Rae in the play-off or promotion seasons. He was an effective player in some hard fought away games, but it's total romanticism as he never ever had the kind of effect the likes of you now apply to him.

Great club servent and good captain, but never had the effect many argue now because he simply wasn't a good footballer.

With Gascoigne - for a while he was absolutely top drawer. Even after the injury he had enough ability to stand out like a beacon at times.

I made a specific point of emphasising that I wasn't comparing Ball's skill to anyone. What I said was, "I'd see a man like Kevin Ball as a legend because he made the most of his very limited talent."

I have 10 times the respect for Ball, than I do for Gascoigne, because I hate to see players who throw away natural talent through stupidity ........ Ball had virtually none but made a good living out of the game, at a high level, and is still working and highly respected.

I suspect it's much easier to hero worship Gascoigne if you don't have to be anywhere near the man.

I agree I have much more respect for Ball as a person, as a club servant, as a man. I just can't understand why anyone would use the term 'legend' for him, because as you say he did have limited talent and there's plenty of players up and down the leagues who make the best of it.

And I certainly dont hero worship Gascoigne.

That's a shame, never mind.

Clueless trying to write Gazza out of World Cup history - did you not watch him at World Cup 90?

I believe there may be 2 'World Cup histories'.

One is the English view and the other is the world view.
