Can the goalposts move

The title is a bit misleading but what I’m saying here is when Mowbray was interviewed for the manager vacancy after Alex Neil left I would imagine for sure the role would have been explained fully and that I’m sure would include transfer policy, style of play etc. So from Mowbray part he played these lads in a certain way and formation with the tactics to suit. The club have stuck with him with that. So why was his position under scrutiny over the summer after achieving so much, and also why did Mowbray have a go at the board. Something not right here.

He'll have known exactly what he's getting himself into and said as much in that guardian piece (if those were his actual quotes), basically he likes bringing youngins through but wanted some experience as well and knew if results didn't go their way he'd be gone

I’m guessing Mowbray was trying to save the board from themselves.
The board though obviously think their theories can still take us a bit further down the road. Mowbray doesn’t. Which makes me believe promotion isn’t the be all and end all for another 18 months minimum. Hence Uncle Tones quotes about “taking longer” or similar.

He was always head coach. He didn't seem to know how to change things and played favourites too often. Yes he over achieved last season, but he was under achieving this season.

They have to move as its the coaches job on the line..TM obviously feels that the recruitment has let him down with the quality of the players brought in and football is a "do it now "not a "do it later" business ..what would you do if you have to get results consistantly but you think that a lot of the players are not ready or worse are not up to it???? Would yo just sit there ,say nowt and watch your job gan down the toilet or speak up and point the finger rightly at the recruitment............. the owners obviously think that another manager can do better than tony with the players available to them ! lets see how it plays out shall we ..with tony (with present players)and especially if we got amad in jan (perhaps thats the frustration that TM been told we wont go for amad)we would be hanging around the playoffs and thats the best we can hope for with any new manager! sadly though if there is a rush to the door by some of our better players we might struggle and finish in bottom half........... this club breaks your heart and empties your pocket on the long bumpy journey to mediocrity........... dear dear me its amazing how speakman gets away scot free every fekking time!I hope his egg nog curdles and his brandy snaps dont and his crimbo wishes come true and radcliffe comes knocking on his door dressed as santa with a job offer!the sooner he feks off he better!

The head coach position is a difficult one to get right within a setup like ours and I'm not sure we have got the balance right yet.

It's a role that has short-term requirements whilst all around it is based on medium to long. They will inevitably blame things around them for any failings as all do, you seldom ever hear a coach say I did a poor job and it's the easiest thing to point fingers at.

The problem with Mowbray was, he wasn't really failing and did not need to point fingers, had he embraced what was happening at the club instead of doing like so many others have and tried to change it, he would have had a better time here. Playing up to fans and throwing players under the bus is the entire opposite of what's required from a coach here, if it's not for you, join Stoke, that's fine.

Without proper management, Speakman will butt heads with this time and time again.

Probably because he changed the y style of play by incorporating Onions into a CB thus bringing/playing the ball out of a defensive set up.. Sadly it hasn't worked in weeks, just look how Huddersfield close Onions down ,time and time again.

He basically hasnt consolidated gains and signs are hes been worked out . Stick with him we stagnate and the model needs constant saleable development

You may be right as most of the players recruited are not ready for the championship this season and most might never be..We might be playing the very long game and i think the sale of clarke is going to be used to fund it!I think the sacking of TM ensures that clarke will be gone in january.

To be fair, the only people who said his job was under threat in the summer was the rumour mills and the press of reading forums.

All Mowbray and the club ever said was that all they were talking about were the possibilities of getting promoted.

It’s up to you to choose which side you believe and it always seems easy to use the old cliche that there’s no smoke without fire.

Personally I think we’re somewhere in between. I think we are a club which alway looks at it contingency planning and if a manager stops getting the most out of the team they will not think twice about replacing at the right time for them.

Mowbray was never who they wanted there long term it's that simple. He overachieved meaning they couldn't get rid, you don't sack a manager who's taken a side to the playoffs. Soon as they seen a chance to upgrade they've taken it
This is as clear as day. Plan was obviously Mowbray steers us to mid table finish then shake hands and part ways. Play offs scuppered their plan as fans would have pushed back too much.

There is an inherent mismatch between "the model" and league performance imo.

If you want to bring on young players, and sell when the price is right, the risk is that you never have a balanced, experienced squad because you're trading over performing players for youngsters. Team performances suffer and league position deteriorates.

That's where we are now.

Ellis Short and the people up top in his regime were known to bullshit our managerial candidates about expectations and transfer budget to get them through the door.

It's probably quite common. I've been lied to by every company I've ever interviewed at then taken the job. Take everything with a pinch of salt.
