Callum Doyle

I think people need to remember Callum only just turned 18 and handling playing in this league well . Seems to have a great temperament .Can legally buy a pint. !

I actually think he’s quite good, and that if we had a competent defensive midfielder in front of him (and whoever else is at centre half) then we’d look much better. Winchester might be the one, he’s done well the last two games, but Evans sure isn’t.

Tbf Rose came in and was excellent. He was obviously at higher standard and further into his career but he justified his place week in week out pretty much.

Doyle hasn't. He's shown some good flashes and it's nice to have a cb so comfortable playing the ball about (even if sometimes it causes us problems) but he's not a particularly good defender (at this stage of his career anyway). There has to come a point where we need to decide if his development, or playing him into form, is more important than the clubs targets. 3 at the back looks like it will give him the extra cover he needs but it's a system to suit the injury list rather than one to remedy issues we've had performancewise.

At 17 he's playing too many games regardless of form as well imo

I think your last point is pertinent

Thought the kid was cracking on Saturday, playing in a strange position against a gale force wind. Hope they let us keep him next season for his development if we get promoted. The lad is a footballer.

Absolutely unbelievable

He’s a big lad for 18 but he’s not fat at all. And he’s never going to be rapid, how many 6 foot 3 centre backs are? More to the point, how many need to be?
17yo lad moves away from his family for the first time in his life, up to Sunderland, playing open age footy for the first time in his life, has a cracking start to the season, has some poor performances in November alongside the whole rest of the team, nowhere near one of the worst performers this season overall…

gets called fat on pure footy

The good thing about young Doyle is he seems to be competitively fit for purpose but he should never have been called on to play game after game after game, unfair on the lad.

Again though its LJ. I thought it was time to move him at the weekend so LJ did ok there.

I thought he’d never make the change, stubborn git. A proactive manager would’ve changed the shape when Rotherham turned us over. There was no right to go to Sheff Wed 3 days later in the same shape.

I hope this is a turning point, where the coach is willing to make changes, and thus surprise the opposition. We became too one-dimensional and easy to play against.

One of Callam`s best attributes is that he been competing against strapping "League One bruisers " but not been pushed around. His mood and temperament is spot on. He never seems to shout and scream at the ref but you can see him having a word and he stands up for himself . Cant believe some say he is slow because when he sees space he pushes forward ( like a charging bull) with pace like he might play in midfield . Lots of talent this lad and he can only get better .

Noticed him having one or two whinges yesterday ( possibly justifiably) once with Dajaku for not making the correct run (in his opinion) to his pass, and another time with Hoffman for passing him the ball when ( in his opinion) he was loser down too quickly.
Is he beginning to feel the pressure, has he got the hump or is he correct at whingeing at his team mates in those circumstances?

He needed eased into men’s football and we’ve dropped him in at the deep end.

It's tough, very tough, and also I think very good indeed, we are not finding it easy to find a way to win games at all or get promoted, but League One is not the Champions League. Premiership academy players and League One players are on a similar level for me. The academy players should easily compete with many of those at the lower end of League One and maybe even those at the higher end if they are really good enough.

Totally vindicated for whinging. Got left stranded a few times by Dajaku and it takes a confident, mature head at 18 to have a go at others. Fair play.
