Buying a new bike.

Looking to purchase an adventure or hybrid bike. Any recommendations on a good value bike to buy?

I was shocked at how expensive they were! Budget around £500

Cant make sense of the cycle to work scheme either.

Genesis make decent bikes around the £500 mark.

Cycle to work is worth doing, as you're buying it with pre-tax wages. Basically a legal tax dodge to encourage people to cycle. It depends who your company's scheme is with though, as if the provider is financing the bikes and charging for the "loan extension" at the end of the first 12 months, you'll be paying them the majority of your tax savings in interest and fees.

Different companies have different cycle to work schemes - has no-one where you work used it? I got mine through our cycle to work scheme and it saved a bit of cash and you don't notice is coming out

If you choose to go down the second hand bike route, look on Pinkbike classified for the UK. It’s a very active website/ forum/ classifieds resource and sellers generally ask realistic prices rather then some of the numpties on eBay and Gumtree.

If you’re using the cycle to work scheme, and are still happy paying £500, then you can up your budget to £600-650.

Can someone explain this new fangled bike stuff to me, what's an adventure bike hybrid etc..

Keep it simple though the only bike I've had was a bmx so all I kind of know is racers bmx and mountain bikes from the 80s/ early 90s.

lots of decent 2nd ones about, look on FB pages. CDNE for instance
More road bikes on CDNE and YCS

What type of riding will you be doing? Distance etc?

Probably a flat bar hybrid or maybe even a gravel bike like the Specialised Diverge.
Should have probably said, I've got chronic sciatica. Would this impact the choices? Riding position, saddle, etc
Hybrid will be great then. If you're already fairly fit consider a single speed, that will keep you fit!
Nah well out of shape, desk job and bad back limits what I can do. Single speed as in no gears? That'd probably suit me tbf, I've never had a bike with gears. I always rode bmx as a bairn.

Look at a Giant Roam - Cycleworld in Sunderland will order one. They usually have a good stock in - but are a bit busy right now! Canny bikes from £450
