Building Work At The Ground

What are they building?
Big lights...... although I think they're still waiting on planning permission so they can't actually start the construction but they have taken a punt and started the groundwork.

Youre correct. If they dont get the planning permission there will be 6 x concrete platforms all waiting to be hooked up to when they eventually do.

The link below contains a report about the various options for the lighting design consultants and the differing amounts of foundation that the options would require. The retractable lights require much larger foundations esp with the high water table/proximity to the river. Worth a read if interested in the technical reasons behind the application.

how do you feel MBH, you live down there don't you ? I don't see why they have to be permanent myself, surely there's technology to raise and lower them these days

Hideous some of these objections, even more so when you consider the fact there are floodlights next door to the ground for the football pitches.

Just reading one of the objections - "Highway Safety" - The sheer size and visual impact on the landscape will unavoidably cause distractions to road users. There are a number of high speed busy roads in and around the area, not least the A1 motorway. The issue of road safety should therefore be considered a material matter when reviewing the planning application"

The same objection mentions the golf club were rejected planning application to build an extra storey on their club house which seems very extreme indeed.

The same objection mentions "the loss of view on my property" - erm what "loss of view" exactly??

Another objection suggests the floodlights would make the area a less family friendly area, hence affecting youths in the area as many families would be put off by the appearance of the floodlights. How does that work exactly??? "sorry son we're not going to watch Durham tonight in T20, as those floodlights look horrible". Somehow I don't think so.

This is a red herring TBH. for the last God knows how many years the sky has been illuminated all night by lads and lasses playing on the all weather pitches down there. This is no different and in fact will be on for far less time than the all weather lights.

If you read the link to the report I posted above you will see why the retractable lights are not really a solution. They will still be prominent and are much more expensive both to erect and maintain, among other things.

I know loads of the objections are just daft and no more than NIMBY but I do believe the towers will spoil the appearance, the lights will barely be used, objecting to light pollution is silly

I have read it and I don't believe them tbh, we must be capable of lighting a cricket ground for a few nights a year without the need for pylons

I would be one if the first to take advantage BTW, struggle to get there at any other time

Interesting article on cricinfo by David Hopps. Looks like the Earl of Scarbrough who owns Lumley Castle is one of the main parties objecting to the floodlights and is helping co-ordinating support. Hopps goes as far as to say Durhams debt problems are so acute this could finish them. Not sure how accurate that last bit is but they are not just fighting a few neighbours on the local estate.

Strange one the road safety one. The M27 runs with yards of the Rose Bowl and they've managed floodlights.

Harker has an awful lot to answer for regarding the clubs debt. Surely the ecb won't allow them to go under.
