Budapest - best district to stay.

Was there just last month, stayed at the Continental in the Jewish quarter. Loads of excellent friendly bars and restaurants, cheap as fuck unlike the tourist traps in Central Pest, easy walk to river, public transport is fantastic anyway.

we stayed in a hostel which was in a cracking location. Well I say we stayed there. We turned up on the first night, took one look and done a runner. It was effectively a big house with no locks on the doors, no carpets, no-one in charge but a couple of travellers who were "running" the place, graffiti all over the walls and rabbits running about shitting everywhere.

we found somewhere else and booked in there then went and got pissed. Hostel was opposite a big nightclub so we decided we'd try our luck before going into the club. Managed to get into our old hostel, got into our old room and spent half an hour in the kitchen helping ourselves to the beers without anyone questioning it. Told some Australian geezer that we'd cooked the rabbit and he was near enough ready to burst into tears.

(I realise this doesn't help you but what a mental place Budapest is).
